Tennessee Tech, Bad Kickers, Balls and More

UofL looked 10 times better this week and not just because the competition was less than impressive. They were doing things that they couldn't do last week. Sure, maybe the score reflected that they weren't playing a very tough team in Tennessee Tech

Cantwell had a much better touch on the ball, he wasn't throwing it too hard or airing out over his receivers heads. He was putting it into their hands as well as giving them good leads. He seemed like he was more in sync with them, they better timing. It wasn't like the Kentucky defensive backs were knocking the ball down that much last week, the problem was that Cantwell and his receivers weren't in sync. Beaumont looks really, really good as he's someone to really be excited about for the future, if not now.

The running game also looked considerably better as they were hitting the holes with power and getting plenty of yards after contact. Brock Bolen looked like a beast and Victor Anderson looked to be the answer to our questions about the running game, although it will be hard to know for sure until we see him against a few good defenses. The defense looked strong again (that still feels weird to say). They are making fundamentally sound open field tackles which was a large reason why they looked so stinkin' horrible last year.

Special teams. looked. horibble.

Seriously, three out-of-bounds kickoffs in a row? The way Papa John's Cardinal Stadium cheered when Philpott kept the ball inbounds was the way that Freedom Hall used to explode with cheer when Ellis Myles would hit a free throw. As funny as that is, it's also scary. You can give Tennessee Tech that kind of field position and it won't be a problem. Although, when you put and explosive offense like West Virginia or South Florida, even a team like Cincinnati on the 40-yard-line then you better believe you're going to be in trouble. Philpott needs to go outside and start kicking balls now, and not stop until November.

Also, I didn't attend the game yesterday. But a portion of the commentary I heard may have been some of the funniest ever. There was about 7 minutes to go in the first half and the Tennessee Tech offense looked like they executed some kind of failed flee flicker, that or the ball just popped right out of his hands. The commentators then went on to discuss "holding on to the ball," etc. The conversation went like this.

Commentator 1: Yeah he lost his handle on the ball. I mean, I've held a lot of balls...
Commentator 2: (Laughs very subtly)
Commentator 1: ...and they don't have handle on them.
Commentator 2: ...Okay... I can't really argue with you...
Commentator 1: Yeah, they had laces on them but, you know, that's not really a....

(Very Long Awkward Pause)

Commentator 2: It's going to be hudson on the return from his own two yard line.

Probably one of the funniest things I've heard in my life, at least from a commentator.
