Here are my Top Ten Lists of Top Ten things in college football after Week 2.
Top Ten Teams
1) USC: The Trojans look absolutely loaded and ready to roll.
2) Ohio State: If I were playing USC the next week I may be looking ahead a little as well.
3) Oklahoma: If there was a playoff, they would be in it.
4) Georgia: Certainly haven't done anything wrong.
5) Florida: Absolutely loaded.
6) Texas: Colt McCoy may be better than we thought.
7) Oregon: Deeper than they've looked in quite some time, if not ever.
8) Wisconsin: Power Running at its best.
9) LSU: No one has knocked off the defending champs yet.
10) Missouri: I'm less than sold on the soft defense.
Ten Teams That Stink
1) North Texas: If you aren't going to tackle anyone, why bother showing up?
2) Utah State: Many think they are the worst.
3) UTEP: Mike Price looks bad, like he's serving a prison sentence.
4) Baylor: They've been on this list so long, they may get a plaque.
5) Florida International: They're not just for Homecoming anymore; they're expanding into office picnics.
6) Army: Taking stink to a whole new level losing to UNH.
7) Syracuse: What exactly is going on there?
8) Maryland: Clueless defined.
9) San Diego State: Losses to Cal-Poly and Notre Dame on their resume.
10) San Jose State: Teams with graduation rates in the 30 percent range should be good, why aren't they?
Ten Teams That Don't Stink Anymore
1) Stanford: Downright respectable.
2) Temple: Not a gimme any longer.
3) Buffalo: They just cover and cover.
4) Duke: Cutcliffe has them looking prepared at least.
5) Vandy: What can I say about the Commodores?
6) East Carolina: More on them later.
7) Miami: The Canes look like they're on their way back.
8) Rice: Don't look now, but the Owls are 2-0.
9) Tulsa: A legit shot to run the table.
10) Northwestern: Good every 10 years or so; this may be that 10th year.
Ten Biggest Disappointments
1) Notre Dame: Doesn't look promising.
2) Clemson: How could they come out so flat?
3) Pittsburgh: If they drop the P-I-T-T-S-B-R that would leave UGH, sounds about right.
4) Texas A&M: Maybe RC Slocum wasn't so bad after all.
5) West Virginia: Doesn't look like Bill Stewart will get a National Title as a first year coach.
6) South Carolina: My 12-year-old nephew is better than any active QB on their roster.
7) Arkansas: I don't think this miracle escape continues this week.
8) Michigan State

Many good points here Mitch, well done.
Wisconsin and Missouri seem to be too high on your top ten list.
You are right about Notre Dame being disappointing - I'm disappointed they didn't lose. Would have given me ton of ammo against some friends and enemies.
Do you think Sanchez is that good, or were you never that high on Leinart?
Skip Holtz - number 1 with a bullet

I'm big on Wisconsin this year, my pick for the Big Ten. Not sold on Mizzou but don't see anyone who could really be ahead of them.

I was really down on Wisconsin, but they have been better than I expected.
Skip Holtz is the next multi-million dollar hire. There may be an SEC team (S. Car, Miss State?) looking for a new coach.

With Wisky any team that can run like that can control a game. they make a lot of mistakes which makes the score look scary at times even when they are dominating.
I'm not sure how long the ECU's run will last but we have to give them props for what they've done so far.

Mitch, always enjoy your work! You are always fair in your assessments.
Have to disagree on where you have my DAWGS ranked. They should be ahead of the Sooners, and Ohio State will fall after their lack-luster showing against Ohio. That was pathetic. Pathetic!
Thanks for recognizing Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech. He is an excellent coach and does well everywhere he goes.
East Carolina is for real, but those of us in the south have known that for a long time now.

Thanks Ghost, The top 10 will sort itself out, it's just week 2. I thought Oklahoma beating Cincinnati was just slightly more impressive than beating Central Mich since Cincinnati is a BCS conference school. We still got 13 weeks to sort it all out.
Thanks for the comments.

I can see your point about Oklahoma better than Ohio State staying at #2, but as you say - it will all sort itself out.
BTW, thanks for the picture of UGA at the top. What a beautiful DAWG!!!

Great lists, Mitch! Can't really disagree with any of it.
I love Skip Holtz and the Purple Pirates! What a team! If you count last year's bowl game it's three ranked opponents they've beaten in a row (#22 Boise State).
Love the South Carolina/Oregon State game! LMAO!

Kristofer, speaking of East Carolina and Boise State: I live in Idaho now, and had some guys in my church question who in the world EC was. They felt insulted that BSU was playing them. Being from Georgia, I told them that BSU was in trouble..........and sure enough, they now know who the Purple Pirates are! You are right, they are awesome.

When you see (three times, I think!) ECU ballcarriers fighting tackles, and they're still on their feet when the play stops, that's not just heart or talent, that's coaching. Bravo Skip. WDE

The Beavers went to the spread, and really opened things up, but the Cocks defense stiffened, and got great penetration.

There's a lot left to be played, some of this stuff will sort itself out. At least we're starting to see who is going to be a factor and who was just in there so the media could cover all of the geography.

Chris Moeller 10 months ago
I think Sooners are the #2 team in the country. Bradford is unbelieveable and the best complete quarterback I have seen in years. I also think Auburn is a top 10 team. They struggled in the first game but proved they do have an offense against Southern Miss. And did I mention they can play defense?
Edit Comment Cancel
Mitch at sportschatplace.com 10 months ago
Auburn was my fence team but I couldn't go 4 teams in the SEC. If they play their best all the win in they'll be there, they'll have to be.
The Sooners have done nothing wrong but Cincinnati had a few nice moments during meaningful parts of the game.

I'd have moved Ohio State down to "Top Ten Disappointments"
They weren't "looking ahead to USC", they were just plain lethargic against the Bobcats. One third down conversion from Boo Jackson would've been understandable, but it seemed like every time the Bobcats were on a third down they made a huge play. Where the hell was the much-vaunted Buckeye defense in all this?
Edit Comment Cancel
Mitch at sportschatplace.com 10 months ago
The Buckeye defense looked really slow in space, they will have to improve this week. No Div 1 team is a real gimme anymore since the 85 scholarship limit came in. I really think OSU ws showing as little as they could on both sides of the ball because they know USC will have the game film under their pillow all week.

Ohio State at 2? Mmmm. Not sure about that one...
How far do you think the loser of OSU/USC will fall after this weekend?
Edit Comment Cancel
Mitch at sportschatplace.com 10 months ago
I just like to see a one vs. 2 match up, I'm not sure who should really be there. It depends on the score but if it's within 10 neither leaves the top 10.
The future is bright in Miami.

I must say, I didn't see enough Jacory Harris.
I was thinking: 'maybe they'll bring him in for a change of pace...' and I didn't really remember seeing him much at all...maybe 5 or 6 plays, if that many. The O was stalling so much, I thought it might add a new wrinkle, so to speak.
That was the only thing I questioned...the defense really surprised me. They were getting to Mr. ESPN and giving him some good licks after he turned the ball loose. That's what I like to see.
I said it earlier, if the Canes can ever get back to their steady QB play, they are going to surprise a lot of teams. For sure.
I hate that you have to wait a few years for revenge...
Edit Comment Cancel
Mitch at sportschatplace.com 10 months ago
I'm not a fan of the two QB system but I think Jacory can and will be a great QB, I would like to see him at least red shirt 1 year, after what we've been through we don't want to waste a snap with a QB who can't get it done. I think Nix just needs to either open the playbook or get a new playbook, it seemed like it was 3rd and 5 all night.
Maybe it's just me but I think college football is just more fun when Miami is good.

Hahahaha South Carolina vs. Oregon State. I would pay to be one of the announcers for that game, especially since I am a duck fan and because of the fact that i would have a problem making middle schoolers across the country laugh their a$$es off.
oh and as a duck fan, i think you're giving oregon too much credit at this point. it will be interesting to see how we do against purdue and beyond since our schedule becomes pretty tough starting next week (washington and utah state aren't exactly world class teams). and i think our success on offense has more to do with chip kelly than mike bellotti. but of course i don't mind that you gives the ducks a little bit of love though.
GO DUCKS!

If you absolutely need to revisit this subject it wasn't what you said, it's how it was said. For those of us who are real college football fans and actually have a team it is like a religion to us, something that is in our blood and something that we grew up with that is very much a part of us. It is something our families are a part of and the our team and fans are our family. You insulted me, my religion and my family. Being from Miami I have tons of friends who went to UF and know people who have kids currently there, it is obvious you are truly clueless
I am not one of those people who run around saying the game was closer than the score, the score was the score. I think a score might not be an indication of the entire game and I certainly feel that way about Saturday night. If you knew anything about Miami football and where they have been and where they are coming from last season you would know the loss and especially the effort was far from humiliating. In College football the only way the kids really humiliate themselves is when they quit out on the field, I didn't see that Saturday night.
What I saw was and inexperienced yet very talented team play a very experienced and talented team on the road in front of a wild SEC crowd in a night game and they pretty much held a guy who scored 738 touchdowns last season while playing in the toughest conference and picked up a Heisman Trophy along the way pretty much in check for over 3 quarters, something no one else seems to be able to do. In the end the Canes didn't have the experience and when you play true Freshman and Sophomores it usually means you don't have much on the bench and they basically ran out of gas.
If you visit my site or read my posts and comments (Not sure why I just asked you that because after your self humiliating comment it's obvious that you did neither) you would have seen the words come right fro my mouth congratulating the Gators and also talking about how Tin Tebow is everything the student athlete should be.
I think we can put your humiliating work to rest now.

If I add anything to end this debate between you two, let it be this. I went to Saturday nights UF-Miami game. The atmosphere outside the Swamp before hand was insane. Miami may have been a severe underdog, but you would not have known by the fan intensity. There were at least 20,000 people around the stadium right at kickoff looking for tickets. It was the hardest ticket I have ever tried to get for a Gator home game. There was nothing really humiliating about Miami's showing on Saturday. Dissapointing may be the better word. This was supposed to be a statement game that Miami was back. They played a solid game defensively and they have just as much speed as Florida does on both sides of the ball. They just couldn't make plays when they had to. They are nowhere close to being the Miami of old, but this loss to the Gators may be their only loss this season. The defense will keep them in ballgames until the offense jells to the point where they can put up a bunch of points. This Miami team will be a serious contender in 2 years.

Another Duck fan here who agrees with a couple of earlier comments. I think the Ducks are very talented. I'm not completely sold on them being a top 10 team yet though. If they go into Purdue and beat them soundly, I'll be more of a believer.
My biggest concern is Roper. I'm not sure how he'll react to top pressure defenses. He's athletic and has done fairly well so far, but we haven't played the likes of USC, Cal, UCLA or Arizona State yet. We'll find out for sure soon enough...and I hope you're right.
