Maryland Football: Can Mike Leach put the Terps over the top?
First reaction is why, right?
Why is the ACC Coach of the Year being forced out at Maryland? Well, Ralph Friedgen did a nice job in his 10 years at the helm of the Terps. But 'nice' wasn't 'good'. 'Good' wasn't 'great.'
As athletic director Kevin Anderson said in explaining why the school is buying out Friedgen's remaining year on his contract for $2 million, he wants to take Maryland athletics from good to great.
He wants ACC championships and BCS berths. Friedgen was 36-14 overall, and 22-10 in the ACC, prior to the conference's expansion. Since then, he is 33-36 overall and 21-27 in the ACC.
Anderson believes somebody like Leach can take the Terps over the top. Granted, Leach didn't do it at Texas Tech, but he also played in a conference and division (Big 12 South) that was far superior, and far more difficult, than the ACC.
