I never felt happier for an individual player than when Peyton Manning won the Super Bowl last season.
Now, I’m a Denver Broncos fan. Have been since well before they won their back-to-back titles.
But lately, they’ve given me nothing to be too happy about, so I’ve turned much of my NFL attention to Manning.
I’ve loved how Manning plays since his days at Tennessee.
I love that in this age of the dual-threat quarterback, he’s able to sit in the pocket and tear teams apart without having to use his legs.
I’m just as big a fan of his commercials. From “cut that meat!” to “buy a bigger shirt,” he’s always funny and just cocky enough to get away with it.
So when people started comparing him to Dan Marino—the best quarterback to never win a rin—my appreciation for Manning put me on the defensive.
I mean, Marino was a great quarterback, but the Colts probably have a much better team than he ever did. I told everyone Manning would win one, but everybody was doubtful.
So when Manning hoisted the Lombardi trophy almost a year ago, I felt like I was hoisting it with him. I celebrated not the Colts’ victory, but his and mine.
There have been a lot of memorable things happen this year in sports. Unfortunately, most of them have been negative.
But Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback of my generation—sorry Tom, but it’s true—and his winning it all was my favorite sports story of 2007.
