Three years ago, Shonn Greene was a red-shirt freshman running back at Iowa. He and Albert Young formed a potent duo that led Iowa to the OutbackBowl against Florida. His career was only going up. In his sophomore year, he helped Iowa and Albert Young to the Alamo Bowl against a struggling Texas team.
But, in 2007, Greene took a turn for the worst. He was dismissed from the team for violating team rules, and spent a year at a Junior College refining his skills not only on the field but in the classroom. Iowa used a red-shirt on him and brought him back after the 2008 Spring Practice.
Greene was recently named the starter for the Hawkeyes, and burst on to the scene against Florida International, rushing for a career high in yards. Iowa has had a recent history of being forced to dismiss talented players from its team for violating team rules, and Greene was no exception.
A 23-year-old red-shirt junior, the New Jersey product seems to have found a niche in this offense. At 5-11, 235 lbs, he has a great combination of power and speed.
Iowa hopes to use his rushing talents, along with the dual-threat ability of sophomore standout quarterback Ricky Stanzi to lead this young offense, that does not lack playmakers.
