JaVale Mcgee: Was He Sending the Heat a Message With This Offensive Foul?

Ross ColemanAnalyst IDecember 19, 2010

During Saturday night’s Heat and Wizards game, Washington center JaVale McGee brought down a defensive rebound and started the break himself. The result was McGee trying to either jump over James Jones, or to knock him out of the game.

I am inclined to think McGee was trying to send a message by deliberately going at Jones.

If you look at the video again, it looks like McGee changes directions to jump into Jones instead of going around him. While it may be a stretch to say that he did it on purpose, it certainly looks like he meant to do it.

McGee also goes for Jones’ groin. While it may not be the honorable thing to do, McGee has shown that people are not afraid to play rough with the Heat.

Actually, McGee has started to really become a good player for the Wizards. The third year player is averaging career highs in points with 9.4, rebounds with 8.4, and blocks with 2.4. Lakers forward Ron Artest had a few backhanded compliments for the Center out of Nevada:

“He potentially could be a really good player. I think he got to go to school a little bit more. He’s got to work on that IQ a little bit. He got to watch more tape. I don’t think he watches tape. I think he plays video games. I do.

"I don’t think he watches tape. I think he plays video games and I think he could possibly have an Atari. He should upgrade to a Play Station…Possibly Atari. He could potentially become a force, if, if he wants to. But if he doesn’t, he can continue to play Atari.”

Now that the Wizards have traded Gilbert Arenas, I would expect McGee to shoulder more of the load in Washington.
