Ricky Stanzi is currently the backup quarterback on the Iowa roster. Yet he is playing better than any Hawkeye quarterback since Heisman Trophy runner-up Brad Banks.

The Hawkeyes have scored over 35 points in both of their first two contests, and that is due large in part to the play of the standout sophomore. As it stands right now, Stanzi is 17-of-24 passing with three touchdowns and 252 yards, leading the Hawkeyes to a 2-0 record.

Granted, they are not playing the toughest of competition yet, but he is getting the whole offense involved. Coming off a brilliant performance against Florida International in which he thew three touchdown passes, Stanzi has Hawkeye fans excited about a possible Big Ten title.

Iowa's toughest games are at Illinois, at Penn State, and home vs. Wisconsin. If Iowa is to contend for the BCS, it would need a tougher non-conference schedule, but Iowa should be a very legitimate threat for a sleeper in this year's bowl schedule.

Iowa has a great defense, and an above-average offense, but with Stanzi leading the way, the Hawks appear to be a contender for the Big Ten championship.
