Kickoff the 2008 NFL Schedule with the Right Beer

Corey KoehlerSenior Analyst ISeptember 5, 2008

Ya, ya, ya. The Giants and Skins opened the NFL season on Thursday night. But, you and I both know that the real opening day is the day when we have a full slate of games to pour over. And speaking of pour, what is opening day without an ice cold beer to sip on?

Today I am going to share a few of my favorite brews with you.

To be honest I was always pretty boring with my beer selections until recently. Mich Golden Draft Light or Bud light or anything anyone offered up was usually fine. But now, they only do in a pinch. I am happy to say that I have been broadening my horizons over the past year and so can you with the beers listed below.

Oh and remember, never get really drunk - you don’t want to be that guy. And always, for Gods sakes, drink out of a bottle or a glass unless you absolutely cannot.

Heineken - An old stand-by and worth the few extra bucks. You can’t go wrong with either the keg can or bottle.

New Castle Brown - I never get a hang over when I over indulge with this stuff and either will you. Not sure what it is but that’s always a plus. Oh and it is about as smooth as it gets for a darker -not dark - beer.

Light and Tasty

Rolling Rock Green Light - Last summer this was all I would drink. Not only does it taste good but it is easy on your figure, clocking in at 84 calories and 2 net carbs. You won’t find a better tasty diet beer.

Bud Light Lime - Not sure what it is but I can stop drinking this “borderline chick beer” over this last summer. It gives you that beer fix while quenching your thirst  (like no other beer I’ve encountered).

Kickin It Old School

Grain Belt Premium - A light and tasty, old-school Minnesota beer that must be consumed out of a bottle. You don’t have to have hair growing in strange places to enjoy this brew. Tasty!

Wisconsin Only

Spotted Cow - If you live in or around Wisconsin you need to grab a twelver of this stuff the next chance you get. My favorite thing to ever come out of Wisconsin. This beer is great.

Never on an Empty Stomach

A good way to make sure that you don’t get to tipsy is to make sure you have some great food to wash down all that beer.

Just so happens that James - or Dubz as you know him here on the Goat - is a BBQ maniac with all kinds of ideas for you. He has whipped up a post that will have your mouth water out of control. I would suggest that you swing on over to his blog, DoubleDanger, and check out his tips on how to throw the perfect opening day tailgate barbecue.

There ya go. Whether you are tailgating, partying or just parking your rear on the Lazyboy for the afternoon, you are set. Happy opening day!
