Picking the best sports moment of 2007 is a difficult task, considering that it was a year full of magnificent (and some not-so-magnificent) headlines.

Sure, there were the negatives—Michael Vick, Marion Jones, Tim Donaghy—to name a few.

But the positives were as good as ever this year. Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record, the Golden State Warriors triumphant upset of the top-ranked Dallas Mavericks, the Florida Gators repeating as NCAA basketball champions, and the Red Sox winning the World Series were all tremendous moments that reminded our country why we love sports.

However, none is the top sports story of the year.

So unless you have not been around a TV in the last month, you have probably already guessed that the top sports story of the year is the New England Patriots dominating season. They currently stand atop the NFL, seemingly untouchable at a perfect 15-0. Tom Brady is having the best season of his career, on pace to break Peyton Manning’s single season touchdown record. Randy Moss is likewise excelling within Bill Belichick’s system.

Although the season seems flawless from a numerical standpoint, there has been occasional controversy surrounding the Patriots. Early in the season, Belichick was fined for a videotaping scandal. Following that incident, the Patriots had to withstand criticism that they were piling on points long after victories had already been secured.

Nonetheless, what Brady, Moss and Co. are doing in Foxboro is already historic.  And if New England remains undefeated en route to their fourth Super Bowl victory in seven years, they may very well be recognized as the greatest team in NFL history.
