Preview: San Jose State (Silicon Valley Meets the Corn Bowl)

Gameday: San Jose State at 'Skerville, 11:30 pm, Saturday 6th (PPV)
Trojans 2007 Record: 5-7 (WAC 4-4)
Trojans Key 2007 Wins: Nevada

The (kinda) Big Story: Junior quarterback Kyle Reed transferred to the Spartans from Cal after he was passed over as the back-up field general (yes, passed up as second string). Reed, a highly-touted prospect out of an Oakland high school, rescued San Jose State's opening effort against UC Davis by coming off the bench for two second-half touchdown passes including the game winner with eight seconds to play. Reed will be the starting man as he leads his 26-point underdog Spartans into Lincoln. Moral of the story - the guy couldn't make second-string at an average BCS school. Don't let the OWH fool you into thinking this guy is Chase Daniels.

Spread the Word: The Spartans utilize a spread offense that brought BCS-bound Hawaii down to the wire in a 42-35 loss. SJSU will be operating the same system that three of the next four Husker opponents will utilize (New Mexico State, Missouri, Texas Tech). Comparing the Spartans' success in the spread offense to Missouri or Texas Tech is like comparing the Toyota Yaris to a Formula One. Nevertheless, a healthy diet of sub-par spreads over the next two weeks should serve as a telling litmus test as the Blackshirts prepare for the high-efficiency Big 12 attacks.

When This Thing Hits 88-Miles Per Hour You're Going to See Some Serious Sh**: In 2000, Nebraska hammered the Spartans 49-13 in its season opener on its way to rolling up 505 rushing yards. Unfortunately, Husker fans can't turn back the clock to the triple option glory Y2K days, but the Faithful should rightly expect an offensive explosion out of the Big Red. On the bright side, we haven't had to stock up on glowsticks and SPAM lately (okay, the SPAM thing wasn't all that bad). Enjoy a Big Red feast of shotgun option, a misdirection razzle-dazzle aerial attack, and plenty of Lucky, Castille, and Helu.

At the End of the Day: Nebraska's performance against San Jose State will serve to further strengthen the Blackshirts' confidence as they roll toward Virginia Tech. The defense needs a positive turnover margin and improved secondary reads in order to build on the late game mistakes against Western Michigan. Shawn Watson should push for 60 on the scoreboard and 500-yards on the books. San Jose State will be the bottom of the barrel on the '08 schedule. They are that lonely fry at the bottom of the sack, the old sour cream in the back of the fridge, the old pair of Nike Airs you use for mowing. The Huskers are giving 26 points. If Pelini is going to rebuild the Red, it starts with utter dominatation over the early season teams just looking for a program building paycheck to come to Lincoln. Expect nothing less.

In Other News: If Sarah Palin's husband is going to sit through the entire GOP's vice presidential nominee acceptance speech with a dip in, the least the secret service can do is provide him an official White House spitter. The old Busch can with paper towels stuffed in the bottom was a little schlocky.

The Pick: Nebraska 62 - San Jose State 21
