Kevin Keegan did not resign, or get sacked, straight after the transfer deadline expired—as many reporters had suggested.

However, following a row with owner Mike Ashley and director of football Dennis Wise, Keegan has now stepped down as Newcastle United boss.

Keegan was widely expected to quit the club, after not attending training after the summer transfer window closed.

In an official statement, Keegan said the ongoing problems regarding the club's transfer policy, and Dennis Wise taking charge of signings was what made him take the decision.

This summer several players were signed, sold, or released without Keegan's knowledge. Arguably, the straw that broke the camel's back was the sale of Newcastle winger James Milner to Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa.
