The Astros beat the Cubs 9-7 in a 11 innings on a 2-run homer by Geoff Blum off of Kerry Wood in the top of the 11th. The Cubs were able to tie the game up at seven to take it to extra innings when Jim Edmonds hit a solo blast in the bottom of the seventh.
Alfonso Soriano lead the game off with a lead off home run to deep left center which was his 24th of the season. Houston tied it in the second when Geoff Blum scored on a grounder by David Newhan. Then in the fourth the Cubs took a 3-1 lead when they got solo home runs from both Mark Derosa and Geovany Soto. The Astros scored two in the fifth to make it 3-3 they then scored four in the sixth to grab the lead at 7-3. The Cubs added three in the bottom of the sixth, the first two runs came in on a Ryan Theriot 2-run double that drove in Edmonds and Soto. The third run came in on a Single by Mike Fontenot that scored Theriot to put the Cubs within one at 7-6. Jim Edmonds tied it on a Solo home run to deep left field.

With the game tied at 7-7 in the top of the 11th Geoff Blum hit a two-run home run to deep right field off of Kerry Wood to make the game 9-7 and secure the win for the Astros.
Carlos Zambrano who started pitched five innings as he left early because of right arm problems. He allowed three runs on five while three and walking three. Kerry Wood took the loss and fell to 4-3 on the season. Zambrano will have his arm examined Wednesday to see what causing the pain.
Brandon Backe who put in 4 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking two. Wesley Wright picked up the win and improved to 4-3. Jose Velverde worked the ninth and locked up his 39th save of the season.
With the loss the Cubs are now 85-54 as they still maintain a 4 1/2 game lead on the Brewers who lost to the Mets 6-5.
Tomorrow the Cubs will look to salvage the series with a win as they will send Ryan Dempster to the mound who is 15-5 with a 2.95 ERA while Randy Wolf who is 8-11 with a 4.37 ERA goes for the Astros. Game time is set for 7:05 pm ct.
