The biggest story in the sporting world this year has undoubtedly been the incredible seasons turned in by the Boston sports teams. The Patriots currently sit atop the NFL at 15-0, and have set many team and individual records in their pursuit of perfection.
Tom Brady and Randy Moss are having the best seasons ever at their positions. Wes Welker, the team's "No. 3" receiver, has over 100 catches on the year.
All the critics who said the Pats had no running game have been proven wrong in the last few weeks. Mike Vrabel and the offensive line have finally gotten the recognition they deserve.
It's been a truly special season in Foxborough—11 of 15 wins by 17 points or more, and an average margin of victory of 21 points. On and on the list of achievements could go...
Next we have the Red Sox, who captured their second World Series title in four seasons after an 86-year drought.
The postseason run showcased Josh Beckett, and featured an improbable comeback from a 3-1 hole against the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. Not quite as impressive as coming back from 3-0 against the Yanks in 2004—but not too shabby either.
Perhaps the best story of all was Mike Lowell's remarkable performance. The World Series MVP was forced on the Sox as part of the Beckett deal, because of his high salary and "slow bat." He's a cancer survivor (like Sox pitcher Jon Lester) and a true class act.
Even before his performance in the Fall Classic, Lowell was a fan favorite in Boston. Now those fans would rather have Lowell at the hot corner than Alex Rodriguez Himself.
Last are the two current works in progress, the Celtics and the Bruins. While the hockey team's success has been a pleasant surprise, the C's were expected to be good.
Danny Ainge made all the right moves this offseason, and the new-look team is off to a 22-3 start, best in the NBA. Kevin Garnett has won over fans with talent and intensity. Ray Allen is having his worst season if you judge by shooting percentage, but has already won two games with buzzer-beaters.
Eddie House and James Posey have excelled off the bench, and the rest of the supporting cast—particularly Rajon Rondo—have delivered as needed.
If the Celtics continue to play stifling defense (they're tops in the league in opponents' FG percentage and PPG), they'll have an excellent opportunity to bring another championship to an excellent sports city.
