Bowl Games 2010: Will the Fiesta Bowl Be as Big of a Blowout as We Think?
When the BCS bowl picture started to become more clear, many of the January bowl game matchups made sense:
No. 1 Auburn vs. No. 2 Oregon in the BCS National Championship: No-brainer.
No. 3 TCU vs. No. 5 Wisconsin: Two fantastic football teams.
No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 8 Arkansas: An 11-1 team from the Big Ten and a 10-2 team from the SEC. Very commendable.
No. 4 Stanford vs. No. 13 Virginia Tech: A bit lopsided but still a very interesting matchup.
And then we have the Fiesta Bowl.
This New Year's Day, we will watch the No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners (11-2, Big 12 champions) take on...
The Connecticut Huskies?
Yes, the Huskies' record and strength of schedule aren't exactly amazing, but maybe we're missing something.
Maybe this game won't be as brutal as we think.
Let's look at some of the teams' national rankings...
Total Offense: Sooners (14), Huskies (96).
That didn't work out so well. Let's try a different approach.
Total Defense: Sooners (63), Huskies (51).
Now we're getting somewhere!
Strength of Schedule: Sooners (11), Huskies (65).
Things aren't looking good for Connecticut.
Even though the Huskies may have the statistically better defense, the best offensive team they have played all season was the Michigan Wolverines...who rolled all over them.
Final Score: Oklahoma 45, Connecticut 17
