Fiesta Bowl 2011: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Stanford Cardinal
Fiesta Bowl 2011 has one definite participant in the Oklahoma Sooners, who stamped their ticket with a win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers and totally torpedoed my earlier prediction of Nebraska ending up here in the Fiesta Bowl, with Oklahoma going to the Alamo Bowl.
So, thanks to the Big 12 title turnout, swap Nebraska down to the Alamo, and Oklahoma gets to Fiesta.
Who will join the Sooners? I think it will be the Stanford Cardinal, a team geographically way closer to the Glendale, Arizona, site of the Fiesta Bowl than a potential Big East opponent like UConn, one of the bandied-about possibilities.
Stanford finished second in the Pac-10, only losing to Oregon on the year, and is one of the nation's top five teams. It would make for an extremely strong match between the Big 12's top team, and one of the best teams in the nation overall.
If this game comes to fruition, I expect Stanford to pull out a win in what should be a high-scoring game. Stanford's defense is improved but they are an offense-first team, and Oklahoma similarly relies on big plays on offense for their success. I think this would be one of the more entertaining, high-scoring bowls of the season.
