Capital One Bowl 2011: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Michigan State Spartans
The Capital One Bowl 2011 has first choice of SEC teams after the BCS bowls are sorted out, and all indications point to them selecting last year's BCS national champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The bowl also ties in with the Big Ten, and signs point to Michigan State being the bowl's choice, making an enticing matchup between two teams consistently successful throughout the regular season.
The Capital One Bowl is scheduled for New Year's Day and will take place at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, also the site of the Champs Sports Bowl.
Alabama could have positioned itself for a BCS bowl, but they lost some tough SEC games down the stretch, notably to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. They still boast a talented team, and it's not a geographic nightmare for Crimson Tide fans to get to Orlando, so the selection makes sense.
Michigan State was locked in a three-way tie for the Big Ten title, but is expected to lose out ultimately because of the BCS rankings, which have Wisconsin as the conference's top team. Still, they enjoyed a strong one-loss season, dropping only their game against Iowa.
This bowl would be an interesting match, if it becomes a reality, but I would expect Alabama to come out on top against the Spartans. Both teams are talented, but Alabama has more recent January experience.
