Tiger Woods is atop the leaderboard for just the second time in 2010, carrying a one-stroke lead in the Chevron World Challenge at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California.
Woods shot a seven-under 65 and birdied five of the first 10 holes. He also hit 16 of 18 greens, but (according to his standards) he did not putt particularly well, something that has plagued him all season.
“Not too often do I say I shot 65, and I only made one putt,” he said. “It was a good ball-striking day.
He bogied the final hole thanks to a poor shot off the tee, just one of two bad drives all afternoon.
Despite fourth place finishes at the Masters in April and the US Open at Pebble Beach in June, Woods has gone winless on Tour for the first time in his pro career.
Rory McIlroy and US Open Champion Graeme McDowell shot 66 at the 7,027 yard course. Woods playing partner, Steve Stricker shot and even-par 72.
Play resumes today, and Woods, playing with McIlroy, tees off at 11:55 am (PST).
