Real Madrid agreed to sell the Brazilian to Manchester City for a fee believed to be around 32.5m pounds. Robinho signed a four-year deal with the blue half of Manchester.
I am in a state of shock. You know I actually feel sorry for all my fellow Chelsea fans. A great manager comes along, brings in a great player like Deco, and plans to bring in another player with quality like Robinho. Then the whole deal falls through due to Real Madrid's refusal to sell Robinho for less than 25M.
Having given it a little thought, I must applaud Mr Kenyon and Mr Abramovic for not giving in when it seemed easier to just pay the overinflated asking price.
Then again, I must say it is fittingly ironic that Chelsea missed out on a player as the result of ridiculously over zealous spending on the part of an ambitious billionaire.
At the speed City are developing, it looks like they are the new Chelsea. I wonder how far City will go this season, but I'm sure I won't be the only one. Liverpool and Arsenal might be looking over their shoulders and finding it hard to challenge for fourth spot this time around!
- B/R Ticket Guide
Ten years ago they were in Division Two, and now they have an exciting young team that is going to get better and better.
Chelsea must be gutted, they mugged us over for Shaun Wright-Phillips and now they've done us again for Robinho.
Chelsea were quite confident of signing him earlier in the day, and now this happens? Man City didn't even declare their interest in him until earlier today, and they end up snatching him from under our noses.
What a day!
We all thought Chelsea would win the league three weeks ago, when it looked like Man Utd would get Berbatov anyway. Despite missing out on Robinho I still feel we'll win the league.
The lack of pace in our squad is quite worrying though.
I'm shocked however, that after all his "I want to play for Big Phil and Chelsea" crap, that he actually signed for the team we're playing in two weeks!
There will probably be a lot of "he is no good anyway" posts, I however think he could potentially be great, the key word with Robinho though is "potentially".
You don't know what you'll get, hopefully for the sake of English football Hughes gets the best out of him.
Funny thing is that after all of this, he could line up against Chelsea in his first game for Man City.
City boss Mark Hughes could not contain his delight at clinching a swoop for the 24-year-old:
"I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho," Hughes told the club's official website.
I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.
I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity. This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City Football Club."
Robinho going to City confirms without doubt how money would be the only motivating factor to go to Chelsea.
It's an embarassing day for Chelsea Football Club.....
I'm still hoping to wake up tomorrow with the latest headline saying:
Robinho: "I thought I signed for Man United"...

I don't feel sorry for Chelsea at all. They're absolutely loaded with talent. This makes the race for European places a lot more exciting. In addition to the Top Four, you could have City and Portsmouth feasibly going for a Champions League spot.

Well given we were chasing him all summer and another signs him as someone rightly pointed out, its a real slap in the face....

I have no pity for Chelsea. They already have the players to do well. Man. City is in need of reinforcement. Good for them.
from 2 months ago
Everybody keeps saying that and im not surprised but you must feel for Chelsea and the way City stole the show in the last minute..

although that means, only a bigger chance for them to beat Man. Utd.

Not with Berbatov at United now, Thomas! But City seem to get stronger and stronger and Robinho is clearly their best signing in a long time... and most expensive!
Sorry Chelsea...

Yeah but im sure with Drogba to come back Chelsea still have a fantastic chance of winning the title.
4-4-2 with a diamond midfield is what it seems like we'll be playing this season. Malouda is useless on the wing and SWP is gone. Its now down to cental midfielders to make it work.

Sure, Man. Utd. will beat the stuff out of them, but it's gonna be harder. They got Jo & Robinho and other great players. the derby's gonna be more interesting to watch, that's for sure.

United need to avenge last season's back to back defeats to City. They couldn't possibly have anymore motivation.

sigh. I somehow think he would have fit in better at Chelsea.
from 2 months ago
Im sure he said at his interview that he wanted to fulfil his footballing ambitions and become the footballer in the world!! But if thats the case, then Man City wasnt a very wise choice...

He won't play as a winger (As petrov and SWP will be there) for City, but as a shadow striker off of Jo I guess, Maybe this will improve his game so City should be the place for him.
from 2 months ago
Its certainly a major step down for him. If he couldnt fulfil is ambition and become the footballer in the world at Real Madrid, what makes him think he can do it at City...?

If you read my article..It gives a clear picture of how it was all Peter Kenyon's fault..he did it with United when they wanted Ronaldinho..and he's done it with Chelsea..Public Enemy No.1...Chelsea have only themselves to blame...Robinho had no option he wanted to leave and Real would only let him go to City.
from 2 months ago
Look, it just goes to show that money is the only factor when players are joining Chelsea. Manchester City outbidding Chelsea just shows that Robinho only wanted to come for the money in the first place because if he really wanted to fulfil his 'footballing ambitions' then he would not have chose City over Chelsea...

Here's my take. I don't think Real were ultimately going to sell Robinho to Chelsea. I thinks it's possible they would of just kept him. However when Man City came in with an out of this world bid, they were going to accept it. With Chelsea not willing to meet the overinflated price, Robinho is caught in a rock and a hard place and probably had to accept the move....
Yes it's a disappointment as a Chelsea fan, but we should be alright. Although I imagine that United would now be tipped to be favorites to win the EPL with their reinforcements...As an aside I'm starting to think the Anelka is good but not great with only 2 goals total for us in the EPL(this and last year). Who would of thought after Drogba's media antics last year that we'd be real excited to have him back.
from 2 months ago
Thats the feeling i got when both sides kept coming out with contradicting statements. Either way we still have a fantastic chance to win the title and we can bring a quality winger either in january (unlikely) or next summer....
Drogba might just be our saviour this season. Lack of pace in our team is really a worry. Malouda is useless. Kalou and J.Cole's form are too inconsistent...

Real Madrid are idiots. they just sold him but didnt get anyone. they're going to be weak this season.
from 2 months ago
On the La Liga my bet is on Valencia and i really hope they do well. As for Real and Robinho, it still hurts to see him join City but I guess I lot of people have felt that towards Chelsea when they used go in and nick everybody's transfer targets...

I'm really looking forward to that Chelsea v City game :)
Robinho wanted out of Madrid and he wanted Chelsea but you can't blame him because Chelsea screwed up. He went to the best offer he had on the table.
It's just coincidence you meet them in 2 weeks.
from 2 months ago
We didnt match their asking price and you cant blame us for that either. Roman has been in the game for quite a while now and he is building a better understanding of the transfers work. The days where we used throw money at everything are over....
I think the headline should read `City steal Robinho`. or `Chelsea f_ _ ks up`.
I do not think he had much choice in the matter.
from 2 months ago
I agree. I don't think he was given much choice in the matter by Madrid, though we do partly have ourselves to blame.
from 2 months ago
Well I dont think Chelsea fucked up. We just refused to match their overinflated asking price. Roman has come a long way since his early where he would throw money at everything. Im quite proud about the fact that we didnt give in ...
from 2 months ago
Fair enough Sal.....but he still did not choose City. I really believe he wanted Chelsea.
from 2 months ago
I agree with S here, Robinho had no choice in the matter and all this critisism is unfair..

Well thats all well and good. Thanks for the comment Sergio...
