After many weeks of speculation, it seems the Bryan McCabe trade has finally been made. TSN.ca is reporting that the trade will be announced at 11am on Tuesday morning.
TSN is reporting that the trade will send Bryan McCabe and a draft pick to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Mike Van Ryn. This is surprising to me and many other people, as reports were saying another Panther would be involved in the trade.
It's a relief to me, however, that no Panther forwards will be sent to Toronto. The Panthers need all the offense they can get. The rumored forwards in the trade were Richard Zednik and Radek Dvorak.
A change of scenery may be exactly what Bryan McCabe needs, as he struggled last season through injury and constant negative criticism from Maple Leafs fans.
McCabe scored five goals with 18 assists in 54 games. If McCabe can regain his 2006-07 form when he tallied 57 points, this trade would be a steal for the Panthers. Toronto is hoping Mike Van Ryn can recover from his wrist injury and become the quality offensive defenseman the Panthers' organization expected.
We probably won't know who got the best of this trade until after the 2008-09 NHL season, but for now, it looks to be a little lopsided in the Panthers' favor.
The jury is still out on this one.
