Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox said Monday that cornerback Chris Gamble will be evaluated throughout the week and that his benching against the Cleveland Browns Sunday was strictly performance based.

Fox dodged questions surrounding his benching the veteran cornerback, which he deemed a “coach’s decision,” according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer.

“I don’t like guaranteeing much,” said Fox when asked if there was any guarantee that Gamble would start Sunday. “I know he’ll be at practice.”

Gamble, in his seventh season out of Ohio State University, has a reputation as a great cover corner, but a poor tackler. Against a run-heavy team in the Browns, Fox deemed his cover skills less important than his lack of tackling ability, thus benching the former first-round pick.

The 1-10 Panthers continue to trudge through a dismal season when they travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks Sunday at 4:15 p.m. EDT.
