Benitez's Liverpool: A Lack Of Width

Marc FosterContributor ISeptember 1, 2008

Liverpool FC's start to the season has shown one thing, and that is that the Anfield outfit lack any genuine wide players. And on the last day of the transfer window, is Albert Riera the answer to the wide problems that have been obvious for all to see?

So far this season we have seen Dirk Kuyt play as Liverpool's prefered wide right midfielder, but as much as his selflessness and work rate cannot be questioned, his lack of pace and ability to get down the line make it impossible for him to give Torres and Keane the service they need.

Along the left side Yossi Benayoun has been the prefered choice, but again he is not a player able to attack the line and supply the crosses to the forward line.

I would never prefess to know what is going on in Rafa Benitez mind, but I do feel that he will be looking at using Ryan Babel on the left with Riera on the right side, but is the Spaniard of the quality Liverpool need?

It is to be seen who and how well the current or new wide players will perform this season, but Rafa's previous buys down the flanks have not cut it. However, I prefer to look at it this way: he is due a wide player that performs...fingers crossed!!

I would like to add as well that even though Liverpool have not performed at any reasonable level so far this season, they have still got good results.

Any team can get a result when they are playing well, but it takes a great team to get them when they are not playing to the best of their ability.

Lets see what transfer deadline day brings!

As ever, "YNWA".
