WWE Survivor Series: Power Ranking the 10 Best Matches of Wade Barrett's Career
Wade Barrett has been a huge hit since his arrival into the WWE. He was a part of the hugely successful first season of NXT and was the eventful winner. The Englishman definitely shows some qualities he seems to have picked up by his NXT Pro, Chris Jericho.
After the second season of NXT started, the first-season competitors were starting to fade into the background until they attacked Monday Night RAW. All of the rookies invaded during the John Cena vs. CM Punk main event and they wrecked the whole set.
Most of those rookies would then go on to form a group called The Nexus, with Barrett as leader. Since then, The Nexus has wreaked havoc in the WWE and Barrett has become a main event star which has already featured in two WWE Championship matches.
I have compiled a list of the 10 best matches of Wade Barrett's WWE career, I hope you enjoy reading it!
10. WWE NXT (March 2nd) vs. Daniel Bryan
The first time we all saw Barrett in a WWE ring. This was the second week of NXT and Barrett was accompanied to the ring by his pro, Chris Jericho.
Barrett's promo before the match showed that he was a confident, brash man who could talk well. He faced off against former ROH wrestler Daniel Bryan. Bryan was sporting tape around his ribs due to a match he had with Jericho the week earlier.
Jericho likened his protégé to an eagle stalking his prey. Bryan went for a high-risk move but fell and further injured his ribs, this allowed Barrett to hit The Wasteland for the victory—his first of many in the WWE.
9. WWE RAW (August 16th) vs. Chris Jericho
One night after Barrett and The Nexus lost to Team RAW at SummerSlam, each member of The Nexus faced off against a member of Team RAW.
Barrett went up against his former NXT mentor, Chris Jericho. This was a match Barrett really needed to win to prove The Nexus were stronger than ever.
Jericho started the match well and Barrett struggled to get any offense in. The leader of The Nexus began to creep into the match, if he lost, he'd have to relinquish the leadership of The Nexus.
Barrett began to wear down Jericho but the former six-time World Champion rallied and locked in the Walls of Jericho. Barrett managed to scramble to the ropes and got a two-count of his own after a big boot.
An attempted Code Breaker was reversed by Barrett, who then hit The Wasteland for the biggest victory of his career to that date.
8. WWE NXT (June 1st)—Triple Threat
Barrett, who was ranked No. 1, faced off against the other remaining NXT contestants in the first season finale of NXT. David Otunga and Justin Gabriel stood between Barrett and winning NXT.
This was a typical triple-threat match, all men were in it for themselves and it usually involved two men going at it in the ring with the third on the outside.
Gabriel almost pinned Barrett but that only seemed to fire up the man from Manchester. Otunga, who looked the strongest, was first to be eliminated. Gabriel hit the 450 splash but Barrett pulled him out of the ring so he could pin Otunga, who was now eliminated.
As a one-on-one contest, Barrett begin to dominate, using his vast weight and height advantage to good effect. Gabriel began to fight back with various kicks and got a near fall after a sunset flip. The South African then went for a 450 splash but Barrett got his knees up, he then rolled Gabriel up for the victory.
7. WWE RAW (September 6th) vs. Randy Orton
The winner of this match would go on to face John Cena the following week on RAW.
Both of these men were going to be a part of the "Six Pack Challenge" match at Night of Champions. The match also involved WWE Champion Sheamus, Chris Jericho, Edge and John Cena.
Both men were looking to impress and build some momentum going into Night of Champions. Orton dominated the early going but Barrett turned the tide with a big boot.
Orton managed to fight out of The Wasteland and hit a backbreaker which gave Orton the advantage. With Orton out of the ring, former Nexus member Darren Young's music hit and he went on to say that he would show Barrett that he was the missing link, not the weakest link.
Barrett was distracted by the former Nexus member which allowed "The Viper" to hit the RKO for the win.
6. WWE RAW (October 4th)—Battle Royal
This was Barrett's biggest opportunity. The Battle Royal was organized to establish the No. 1 contender for the WWE Championship.
All the members of The Nexus were involved and they worked together. One of the biggest turning points of the match was the elimination of Mark Henry, which took all the members of The Nexus.
John Cena, who had been forced to join The Nexus, eliminated David Otunga before being ordered to not touch another Nexus member.
The match almost became a WWE vs. Nexus Battle Royal and we then learned that if Barrett didn't become the new No. 1 contender, Cena would be fired.
As the numbers fell, Barrett ordered Cena to guard him so that he couldn't be eliminated. It came down to a final four of Barrett, Cena, Sheamus and John Morrison.
Morrison eliminated himself after kicking Barrett in the head and then Sheamus was eliminated by Cena.
After a heated stare down, Cena finally succumbed and eliminated himself to make Barrett the No. 1 contender at Bragging Rights.
5. WWE RAW (June 7th)—NXT Invasion
This might not be a match but it was still one of the biggest moments of Barrett's career so far.
On the June 7th edition of RAW, the cast of the first season of NXT invaded. It was during the night's main event between John Cena and CM Punk.
Firstly, they attacked Luke Gallows and Punk and then surrounded the ring. Cena tried to fight but had no chance. The rookies then began to wreck the RAW set, demolishing the announcers tables and ring.
They attacked Jerry "The King" Lawler and then went after ring announcer Justin Roberts. Roberts was taken down and then choked with his own tie—something which led to the firing of Daniel Bryan.
The rookies then entered the ring again and attacked Cena once more. They finally ended their surprise visit to RAW with Barrett delivering The Wasteland to Cena.
4. WWE SummerSlam—vs. Team RAW
The rivalry between John Cena and The Nexus came to a head at SummerSlam. It was The Nexus vs. Team WWE (Cena, Edge, Chris Jericho, Bret Hart, R-Truth, John Morrison and the returning Daniel Bryan).
It was an elimination style matchup which The Nexus dominated for the most part. It was left with Cena against Wade Barrett and Justin Gabriel. Cena managed to pull it out of the bag like he usually does and found a way to beat both men to win it for Team RAW.
It was the first defeat for The Nexus as a group and although many at the time thought it would destroy The Nexus, it has only served to maker them stronger.
3. WWE Night of Champions “Six Pack Challenge”
We went into Night of Champions looking forward to a "Six Pack Challenge" match. It would be a six-man elimination match for Sheamus' WWE Championship.
Barrett entered the match as the only man not to have won the WWE Championship before.
Jericho was the first man to be eliminated, it was his last appearance in the WWE—something which the commentators seem to had forgotten. Orton pinned him after an RKO.
The remaining four men then seemed to gang up on Barrett and forced him out of the ring. Edge was next to go though after Cena delivered an Attitude Adjustment
Barrett and Cena then went toe-to-toe and just when Cena was gaining the upper hand, The Nexus came down to attack him. This gave Barrett enough time to get to his feet and then hit The Wasteland on Cena to eliminate him from the match.
The Nexus then went after Orton and Sheamus but were foiled as Cena attacked them with a steel chair and Barrett was then eliminated after an RKO.
Orton managed to reverse an attempted High Cross from Sheamus and hit yet another RKO to become the new WWE Champion.
Barrett may not have been successful but he had a taste of what pay-per-view main events were all about.
2. WWE Bragging Rights—vs. Randy Orton
Barrett secured his title shot at Bragging Rights after winning the No. 1 contender during Battle Royal on RAW.
Cena, fresh off of joining The Nexus, would accompany Barrett to the ring. Barrett added that if he lost at Bragging Rights, Cena would be fired.
The man from Manchester started well and dominated "The Viper" before the referee was knocked down. The Nexus seized their opportunity and attacked Orton while the ref was still down. Cena then entered the ring and helped Orton get The Nexus members out of the ring.
With Orton about to hit the RKO, Cena entered the ring and gave Barrett the Attitude Adjustment. This gave Barrett the win by disqualification and kept Cena his job.
1. WWE Hell in a Cell—vs. John Cena
The feud between Barrett and Cena continued and at Hell in a Cell, they faced off.
This wasn't just any ordinary match though, if Barrett should win, Cena would have to become a member of The Nexus. If Cena was to win, The Nexus would have to disband.
The early stages were dominated by good mat wrestling from both competitors, with Cena looking very impressive.
The match was full of passion and the hatred between these two men really shone through. The Nexus got involved and distracted Cena from the outside, which allowed Barrett to take control of the match.
Barrett began to have his way with Cena, he hit a devastating diving elbow drop which got him a near fall. Cena then fought back and hit his patented modified side slam and Five Knuckle Shuffle.
With The Nexus keeping their eyes on the match from ringside, members of the WWE locker room came out and attacked them to make sure they couldn't interfere.
Cena then looked favourite but Barrett held his own and went for another elbow drop but missed. Cena then showed his guts as he kicked out of The Wasteland.
This was matched by Barrett soon after though when he managed to kick out of the Attitude Adjustment—much to the astonishment of Cena.
Cena then got Barrett in the STF and with Barrett looking set to tap—and The Nexus looking set to disband—a man entered the ring and distracted the referee. Another man then entered the fray and hit Cena with an object to allow Barrett to claim victory and force Cena to join The Nexus.
The two men would later be revealed as Husky Harris and Michael McGillicutty and they would join The Nexus.
