Dutchmen Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel combined to score in the 118th minute for Liverpool against Standard Liege on Wednesday, sending the Reds into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
After winning their first two Premier League games in dramatic fashion against Sunderland and Middlesbrough, Liverpool found the late heroics yet again. Fernando Torres was the hero against Sunderland. Steven Gerrard was the one that broke Middlesbrough hearts with a late go-ahead goal.
Today, it was Kuyt who kept Liverpool's good fortunes going. Babel did some good work on the left side before firing a curling cross into the box. Kuyt got his foot on it near the far post, sending Anfield into yet another crazed celebration.
A heartbreaking loss for Standard Liege, who were the better team I must admit. They deserved to win by at least two goals in the first leg which ended scoreless, and were unfortunate to not take today's match into a shootout. The club has much to look forward to in the future after the performance they displayed in qualifying.
Three weeks. Three late winning strikes. Liverpool fans can breathe easy. Until the next match that is.
