As announced by the Loudmouths on SNY, John Heyman says Jonathan Niese will report to the big club to take John Maine's spot in the rotation. The 21-year-old lefty is 5-1 sporting a 3.65 ERA down at Triple-A.
His first game will be against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 2nd.
This will be a crucial game for this team. There is still the possibility for Maine to be out for the rest of the season if rest and treatments do not work.
Niese will have to prove here that he is the guy to take this spot. If Maine is out, he will have to take the spot in the playoffs.
He is auditioning for next year as well. With Pedro Martinez more than likely not returning next year, the team will have a spot open.
What a rotation the New York Mets could have next season with Johan Santana, Oliver Perez, Mike Pelfrey, Maine, and Niese. It would be a thing to behold.
