Rafael Nadal walked out on to Arthur Ashe stadium court expecting a routine 1st round match and it was.  7-6 6-3 7-6.  The score line was routine the match...  wasn’t

Nadal faced the worlds 136thranked player Bjorn Phau. Skeptics will say that Nadal’s trip to Beijing  made him wary.

While some may say Nadal didn’t look fresh and he may well not have been, what we saw was certainly refreshing.

So many times players like Phau lose before they take the court. Not Phau.

Perhaps it was his experience , Phau is 28 years of age. Regardless it was obvious that though Phau probably knew he couldn’t beat Nadal he  COULD  test him. He did just that.

Phau took the 2 of 3 sets to breakers where perhaps the nerves got to the underdog, however Phaugot to every ball making Nadal come up with answers.

It was an expectedly fun entertaining contest.

I hope a lot of young players saw this match they could have learnt something.

That giving it your best is in itself a righteous victory.
