UFC Fight Night 23: Mitrione vs. Hague and Johnson vs. Guymon Slated
A pair of fights featuring alumni of The Ultimate Fighter are scheduled to take place at UFC Fight Night 23 in January.
Season 10 cast member Matt Mitrione (3-0, 3-0 UFC) will face Tim Hague (12-4, 1-3 UFC) in a heavyweight battle, while Season 9 finalist DaMarques Johnson (14-8, 2-2 UFC) meets Mike "Joker" Guymon (12-4-1, 1-2 UFC) in a welterweight clash.
Johnson confirmed the fight on his official website, while Guymon also confirmed the fight on his Twitter account.
The Mitrione vs. Hague fight is expected to be confirmed shortly.
Mitrione returns to the Octagon following a Fight of the Night performance against Joey Beltran at UFC 119 in September. Mitrione won the fight by unanimous decision, and also holds victories over Kimbo Slice and Marcus Jones in his career.
Hague returns to the UFC for a third time. He went 1-2 in his first run, with a win over Pat Barry in his UFC debut at UFC 98 in May 2009, but subsequent losses to Todd Duffee at UFC 102 and Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 109 led to his initial release.
Hague returned to the UFC as an injury replacement at UFC 113 in May, but a loss to Joey Beltran led to Hague being released again. Hague returns following wins over Zak Jensen and Travis Wuiff in Alberta's Aggression MMA promotion, both of which came by KO in the first round.
Johnson and Guymon could both be finding themselves in must-win situations. Johnson came up short in winning The Ultimate Fighter 9, losing to James Wilks at the finale, but bounced back with victories over Edgar Garcia and Brad Blackburn. Johnson suffered a setback in his most recent fight, losing to Matt Riddle at the UFC On Versus 2 event in August, suffering facial injuries during the second-round TKO loss.
Guymon, an 11-year veteran, made his UFC debut in January, dropping his first fight to Rory MacDonald. He then followed that with an emotional victory over Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC 113 in May. Guymon suffered a loss in his most recent fight to Daniel Roberts at UFC 121 in October, and finds himself likely fighting for survival in the UFC.
While not yet officially announced by the UFC, UFC Fight Night 23 is expected to be a "UFC Fight for the Troops" event. It is expected to take place on Jan. 22 from Fort Hood in Texas.
