When watching baseball, it is easy to focus on the superstar players. Albert Pujols, A-Rod, Chipper Jones, and other stars will always get more attention than most players. Then there are those guys who are not flashy, but always seem to get the job done. Randy Winn is my favorite unsung player.
Winn started out with Tampa Bay in 1998. He was a platoon player up until 2000. In 2001, he began playing regularly in center and left field. In 2003, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners where he shared the outfield with Ichiro. He was a consistent player for the Mariners for 2+ seasons. He was traded in the summer of 2005 to the San Fransisco Giants where he shared the outfield with Barry Bonds. He is currently in his third full season with the Giants.
Randy Winn is my favorite unsung player because he is a hard working, consistent player. He will rarely get headlines, but you know he will impact the game in a positive way. He has been overshadowed by Ichiro or Barry Bonds, but his contributions speak for themselves.
Winn is going to give you consistent numbers every year. He plays almost every day and rarely gets hurt. He will give your team 500+ at bats, 150+ hits, 15-25 stolen bases, 60+ RBI's, and 75+ runs every year. Plus, he is a career .287 hitter who plays solid defense. This year, Winn is having another solid season.
In my opinion, it is time for Randy Winn to play for a contender. With his consistent production, he would be a wonderful addition to any team. Except for 1 year with the Mariners, Winn has mostly played on teams that were out of contention by the start of August. He needs an opportunity to be in postseason play. Maybe he will get that opportunity soon.
Randy Winn is just one of the many unsung players I could write about. Who is your favorite unsung player and why?
