What a Joke!: Dissecting the Pro Bowl Rosters

IconOn February 10th, the latest edition of the Pro Bowl will be played in sunny Honolulu.

The game is officially a joke to me.

It's no longer about putting the best and most productive players on the field—it's about spotlighting the players who will attract viewers.

What follows is a list of the guys who got snubbed. I'm not trying to take anything away from the guys who made it—I'm just making the argument for the next man.

*NFC*

1. Drew Brees (Saints) over Matt Hasselbeck (Seahawks)

Brees had a slightly better passer rating and completion percentage, and more yards. The only knock on Brees is that he threw five more interceptions than Hasselbeck.

2. Clinton Portis (Redskins) over Marion Barber (Cowboys)

Barber only has 871 yards and nine TDs. Portis has run for 1,082 with eight TDs.

This is horrible. The only reason Barber is in is because the Cowboys are winning.

3. Marques Colston (Saints) over Donald Driver (Packers)

I love Donald Driver's game, but he's only managed two TDs this year.

Colston is third in receiving yards, second in receptions, and fourth in touchdowns in the NFC—but once again the Packers are winning, so their players get in first.

4. Trent Cole (Eagles) over Aaron Kampman (Packers) and Osi Umenyiora (Giants)

Cole has more tackles than the other two, and half a sack more. Still Kampman gets the start.

Why?

His team is winning!

5. Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) over Kevin Williams (Vikings)

Williams has 32 tackles and 3.0 sacks on the year. Dockett has tallied 52 tackles with eight sacks and 18 tackles for loss.

6. Ernie Sims (Lions) over Julian Peterson (Seahawks)

Peterson has nine sacks this year but only 68 tackles. Sims has 122 tackles (88 solo)...but he gets no attention because he plays for the Lions.

7. Patrick Willis (49ers) STARTING over Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks)

Both players made the Pro Bowl; Tatupu is the starting inside linebacker.

Tatupu has 101 tackles at this point. Patrick Willis has 142 tackles and 111 solos to lead the league.

8. DeAngelo Hall (Falcons) or Charles Woodson (Packers) over Al Harris (Packers)

Woodson got snubbed because of injury. DeAngelo Hall has 58 tackles and five INTs on the year. Al Harris has two picks and 38 tackles.

*AFC*

1. Derek Anderson (Browns) over Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers)

This is a hard call, but Anderson's 3,384 yards are a little bit better than Roethlisberger's 2,897.

Roethlisberger has a better passing percentage and QB rating, so I'm really not arguing with this one—just putting it out there.

2. Mario Williams (Texans) over Kyle Vanden Bosch (Titans)

"Super" Mario Williams has 13 sacks and 53 tackles on the year. Vanden Bosch has 48 tackles with nine sacks.

Both have had good years, but "Super" Mario has been better. I bet he feels dumb after doing that hula dance in the Broncos game.

3. Antonio Cromartie (Chargers) STARTING over Champ Bailey (Broncos)

Bailey gets the start off his name alone. His three interceptions this year are seven fewer than Cromartie's 10.

4. Sean Jones (Browns) over Troy Polamalu (Steelers)

Polamalu has missed a few games this season due to injury, and has 52 tackles and no interceptions. Sean Jones has 84 tackles and six picks on the year, and didn't catch a whiff of Hawaii.

It just ain't fair.

A final note—I'm so glad to see Sean Taylor was still named to this year's Pro Bowl roster. A tribute to him is the ONLY thing I'm look forward to about the game.
