From UFC 121 to Brett Favre to Cain Velasquez, Sunday's top sports headlines cover a little bit of everything.
In Saturday night's much-anticipated UFC 121 title bout featuring Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez took down the former undisputed heavyweight champ in the very first round.
In addition, according to bloodyelbow.com, WWE star "The Undertaker" confronted Lesnar on camera—in what appears to be a work, Kid Nate writes on the site.
More on the Lesnar/Undertaker confrontation following last night's UFC main bout will be addressed later.
Also, numerous stories have surfaced concerning Brett Favre about the Minnesota Vikings quarterback admitting to making phone calls and leaving messages on Jenn Sterger's cell phone.
But, according to Fox Sports reports, Favre has not admitted to sending her photos.
Fox Sports also confirmed that the battered Vikings QB has admitted to leaving voicemails for Sterger.
Let's move on by taking a quick and solid glance at Sunday's top sports news...
Wayne Rooney, who has been under attack since holding off on signing a new contract with Manchester United, had every right to question the future direction of the franchise, according to SkySports.com.
Specifically, the Sun's Neil Custis told the Sunday Supplement that Rooney has received unfair criticism for how he negotiated his new five-year deal, according to the report.
"By what he (Rooney) has said and what he's done this week, he's actually blown the myth that everything is ok at Manchester United because their main player has come out and said what everyone who wears a green and gold scarf down at Old Trafford has been saying for the last year," Custis told skysports.com.
"That (financial) situation hasn't just suddenly changed because he's signed his contract. They aren't suddenly super rich and the target for every great player in the world to go to."
According to the report, Custis backs the striker's decisions in handling the negotiations.
"For three months Wayne Rooney's thought 'this club is going in the direction where I want to spend the next five years of my career'; he's thought that for three months and then in 48 hours he's changed his mind," Custis said.
"It's an emotional decision based on how Sir Alex played it - he did wonderfully well, tugged at Rooney's heart strings - and I think he was quite blown over by the weight of feeling that came with him saying he was effectively going to quit Manchester United."
According to numerous wire reports, San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum is expected to start Game 1 of the 2010 World Series against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.
In fact, according to nbcsports.com writer D.J. Short, Lincecum told Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com that he will start on Wednesday despite facing three batters in Saturday's 3-2 San Francisco NLCS victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
“I fully expect to make the start,” Lincecum told MLB.com. “It’s not like they told me to get ready for Game 1. They just said, ‘Get ready for your next start.’ So I think that’s what they’re talking about, yeah.”
But, of course, Saturday's win was all about the celebration.
"This is unbelievable," Lincecum said. "It's pretty surreal. You dream about these things when you're a kid. You even dream about them when you're a Major League Baseball player. These things are finally coming to fruition, coming together. When all the pieces come together at once it's a pretty awesome sight to see, especially with this group of players."
Lincecum and the Giants are slated to face Cliff Lee and the Rangers on Wednesday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m. EST in Game 1 of the 2010 MLB World Series.
Todd Bouman, a 38-year-old quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, had not thrown a pass in the NFL since 2005 prior to his Week 7 start.
On Sunday, Bouman got the starting nod for the Jags—who was recently re-signed following injuries to both David Garrard (concussion) and Trent Edwards (throwing thumb), according to USA Today.
Bouman and Jacksonville had a fighting change in Sunday's matchup, trailing by just one point late in the third quarter before a major mistake.
According to NFL.com, that's about the time Bouman first began unravelling—tossing an ill-advised pass that was intercepted and returned 15 yards for a touchdown—putting Kansas City on top 28-20.
Derrick Johnson was the recipient of the INT, retuning the pigskin to the house for the Chiefs.
With the loss, Jacksonville drops to 3-4 on the season while Kansas City improves to 4-2.
The Chiefs were led by QB Matt Cassel, who completed 13-of-18 pass attempts with two touchdowns en route to a 42-20 victory.
Overall, Bouman finished the game with 222 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
According to numerous wire reports, Brock Lesnar was approached by WWE's "The Undertaker" following the fighter's crushing loss to Cain Velasquez.
And apparently, Undertaker wants to battle Lesnar at WrestleMania XXVII—regardless of whether or not the confrontation was a work of art.
In fact, pro wrestling experts from Cage Side Seats explains the following angle on this story:
"Ariel Helwani should have known that something was up when top WWE star and member of Vince McMahon's inner circle The Undertaker agreed to be interviewed by him at UFC 121 for AOL Fanhouse. Especially after the last WWE veteran to do such a cardinal sin, Jim Ross, ended up in Vince's doghouse.
"So it should have come as little surprise to Ariel when The Undertaker made sure to catch Brock Lesnar's eye as he left the cage, made a feeble attempt to goad him into a fight, which Brock ignored, and claimed that they have personal issues."
The site went on to state the following:
"Alarm bells should have been ringing in Ariel's head that maybe The Undertaker, under instructions from his present employer Vince McMahon, was trying to publicly goad Lesnar into doing a WrestleMania match with him next year, just like John Cena did in 2009 with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson...
"...Dana White won't be too happy about all this when he finds out about it. Personally I don't think anything will come out of this and Brock will just use WWE's interest in him as negotiating leverage to get a better PPV cut from Dana, given the millions and millions of dollars that would be left on the table if he jumped ship now and didn't have his rubber match with Frank Mir, which he should comfortably win to set up another big money rematch with Shane Carwin or Cain Velasquez. Returning to WWE can wait until the money dries up in UFC."
Leave it up to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to keep things as simple as possible.
Sure, Dallas' football team is staring at a 1-4 start and will be facing Eli Manning and the New York Giants on Monday night.
But there's still time to bounce back.
"When you're down six strokes, it's probably easier sometimes to swing away because you're already feeling like you need to play well the rest of the way," Romo told Dallas Morning News reporter Todd Archer on Friday. "You don't have a lot of wiggle room. We know we've got to play good. There's not a lot of room for error. We've got to go out and play that way."
Dallas head coach Wade Phillips also remains optimistic about the future of the Cowboys, currently in last place in the NFC East.
In addition, five of the Cowboys next six games are against NFC opponents.
"The bulk of our schedule, meaning the NFC East part of it, is coming up quick," DeMarcus Ware told Archer. "If we can get a lot of these games behind us, get some type of wins under our belt, like right now against the Giants this week, that will really help us out."
Former Houston Rockets head coach Rudy Tomjanovich once said, "Never underestimate the heart of a champion."
Those words rang true on Saturday night in the UFC 121 Heavyweight Championship bout, as underdog Cain Velasquez took down former undisputed heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar with a first-round TKO.
Plain and simple, Velasquez had more heart.
And he walked away a champion.
"I've never, ever seen anything like that," Tito Ortiz, who has been in the UFC since 1997, told ESPN. "You see Cain Velasquez move, and he looks like a 190-pound guy moving around at 240. He's the best guy in the world right now. He actually made Brock look really, really slow."
UFC president Dana White was also impressed with Saturday's debut bout.
"I think it's a big deal," White told ESPNLosAngeles.com writer Arash Markazi. "Obviously, anyone who was at the weigh-ins sees he has a huge following. The guy has become a huge star overnight, and he looked incredible."
The new champion was just as excited.
"I feel great being the first Mexican heavyweight champion," Velasquez said. "I'm going to keep representing. This belt belongs to the Mexican people here in the United States and in Mexico.
"I want Latinos to get involved in this sport. I think we bring a fighting style that we don't stop. … It's the kind of fight people want to see and the kind of fight I bring."
According to Fox Sports reports, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has admitted to leaving Jenn Sterger voicemail messages.
However, Favre continues to deny sending lewd photos through text messages, according to the foxsports.com report.
In an ongoing investigation, the NFL is attempting to speak with Sterger—who still hasn’t decided whether or not to talk to league officials.
“We have an ongoing dialogue with the NFL,” Phil Reese, a spokesman for Sterger, told the Associated Press on Friday. “What we’ve been talking about is having Jenn come in. Like I have said, she is strongly considering it. Ultimately this decision is hers and hers alone.”
Regardless of Sterger’s cooperation with the league, the Vikings QB is just ready to put this issue behind him.
But the stories won’t stop until the investigation concludes.
“At this point we have not reached any conclusions,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told ESPN. “We will continue to pursue opportunities to speak with individuals that potentially have information.”
