Giants Beat Marlins; Take Two Of Three On Gregg Wild Pitch

David BresslerAug 21, 2008

Despite being 6-0 when Josh Johnson starts, the Florida Marlins blew another game in the bottom of the ninth inning, for the second consecutive day.

Even though it was not a 'save' situation, Kevin Gregg, or should I say Kevin "Wild Thing" Gregg, managed to give up the game winning run, without giving up a single hit.  If anyone can do a such thing, Kevin Gregg is your man!

Gregg issued his typical, first at bat walk to Emmanuel Burris(obviously, not intentional), which was followed by a stolen base, then advanced to third on a Randy Winn fly ball.  With two outs, Gregg intentionally walked pinch hitter Benji Molina in order to face left fielder, Fred Lewis.  After a first pitch strike to Lewis, Gregg must have heard somewhere amongst AT&T Park the famous 1966 song "Wild Thing," by the "Troggs."  Gregg issued his seventh wild pitch of the season, landing 3 feet in front of home plate, which forced catcher John Baker to scramble to the backstop for the past ball.  But the speedy left fielder had already scored before Baker could even pick up the ball.

Passan Report on Salary Cap 😬

I understand Kevin Gregg has plenty of experience and should get out of this current 'funk' soon, but when will Fredi Gonzalez pass the torch over to another pitcher who deserves the closing position.  How about the guy with the fastest fastball in all of baseball- Matt Lindstrom?  Personally, I think the closing position is a bit overrated.  You typically come in to pitch a mere one inning, what is so complicated about that? Why not be a tad more spontaneous and change up the bullpen, Fredi?  I was completely surprised Ricky Nolasco was not yanked after the 8th inning in the Marlin's 6-0 win on Tuesday.  Fredi Gonzalez is too predictable when it comes to the bullpen.  Maybe that's why the Marlins had the longest streak of not having a pitcher pitching a complete game.  Three hundred and one games without a complete game, are you kidding me?

Losing 2 out of 3 to the Giants, who have a proud record of 55-72, is not what the Marlins had on their agenda coming into San Francisco.  The Marlins will continue their NL West trip against the first place Arizona Diamonbacks.  Anibel Sanchez and Randy Johnson will be pitching Friday night.  The last time Sanchez faced the Diamondbacks, he threw, ironically, the last complete game for the Marlins, before Nolasco did Tuesday night.  It was not just a complete game, though.  On September 6, 2006, Sanchez no-hit the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.  Hopefully, Sanchez's success will continue Friday night.
