First of all As a community leader of the new Bleacher Report poker section , I feel it is my duty to welcome everyone and invite you all to write articles , let's get this community up and running and maintain it at a level of other great B/R communities.
So to give our community the best chance of exposure , I would kindly remind you to use the star ratings box to rate the article however you see fit , and if you really like an article that you read , please POTD that particular piece . It's important to use these ratings ! .

Phil " Poker Brat " Helmuth , The King Of Poker ?
Let's start our Poker community by talking about one of the true greats of World Poker , Phil "The Poker Brat" Helmuth , a menace at the table , in your face , and outspoken , Phil is now the most decorated player on the circuit just ahead of Jonny Chan and Doyle " Dolly " Brunson , you either hate him or you love him as a guy , but you can't hate his poker skills .
I've had the pleasure of watching Helmuth play many times , he is over dramatic admittedly , but I think that's part of the " in your face " game plan , to put you off your game . He is also very good at calling things before they happen
At the Party Poker late night event shown on UK TV , Helmuth picked up Ace , ten off suit against fierce rival on the TV poker circuit, Dave Devilfish Ulliott who had Queen , Jack of hearts , Devilfish in his usual bullying mood raised Helmuth 10K , Helmuth , who had been unlucky all night and fed up , raised All In 60K , Devilfish called .
Before the dealer turned the flop Helmuth muttered "Queen Ten Ten and I bet I still lose " , Unbelievable , the flop fell 10 Q 10 , but then Devilfish hit his Jack on the turn and Queen on the river and Phil's night was over , he may of been defeated but I was speechless by how he was calling card's before they came out .As annoying as he may be , he won my respect and attention instantly .
Phillip J.Helmuth Jr was born in Madison , Wisconsin on July 16th 1964 , He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for three years before quitting to be a full time poker player and now lives in Palo Alta , California with his wife Katherine and two sons Phillip and Nicholas. .
Phil is best known for his record of WSOP bracelets , His name of the Poker Brat and his scathing remarks about his opponents skills especially after a bad beat .
He has a mightily impressive and record breaking 11 World Series Of Poker bracelet's , he broke the record in the $1,500 No Limit Hold Em event in 2007 and he has finished in the money 69 times In World Series events and Won the main event in 1989 at just 24 years old , no one has won the main event at a younger age before or since Helmuth .

Nice article, a nice read 2, but i'll be honest I have never heard of the guy, and only play poker for fun with mates. (money is usually involved, and i usually lose!)
I can't really make an educated comment, due to the fact I know very little about the poker world.
I have heard of the Devilfish, seen him on late night channel 4/5 poker tournaments, but this Phil guy sounds pretty damn good, 11 world series bracelets, sounds pretty good 2 me!

Yep a Community leader , It needs to take off properly yet tho mate .
Phil Helmuth is a fantastic player to watch , he has great abilities to read people , he can predict hands and he is an absolute nuisance to the other players , I reccomend watching him .
He has came up against Devilfish many times on channel 4 and 5 , Late night poker , the poker den , Party poker world open and they always have a snipe at one another , they always make 30 grand side bets to show their macho-ness at the table .
He is a bit of an airhead and does open his mouth way too much , but look past all that and for me you have THE best poker player Post the Doyle Brunson Hay days .
There are many videos of him on you tube , have a watch when you get time ,

He certainly is the king of Poker , I like Daniel Negraneau personally , Phil has way too much to say , but like you said take away his acting up and you are left with the best poker player ever next to Doyle and J.Chan .
I like the way Devilfish reverses the roles and its he who ends up under Phils skin , amazing battles those two have ,
Nice one for getting poker up andtrunning here , I like a good Poker read .

5 stars mate ... Well done on going for this, god luck with it ... I am like Ryan, I dont watch it or follow it but I play it when I am with the boys, I have a poker night once in a while with a higher buy in and that usually profitable for me, ha ha ... Ive never lost yet ! Anyway down to business ... Nice article, I actually really enjoyed it, great insight, he does sound like a great player and a colourful one at that ... So well dont mate and I hope this picks up for you !

Don't worry im not leaving the F1 community , ill be there as always to read , write and rate .
Its a great game to play , and if you dont lose that much then i think you should try your hand at a casino buy in tourney , you can sit down at a tourney for 20 quid and if you finish top 10 , you will get between 50 and 500 quid back , and its a fun night out , so if you go home after losing 20 quid , its not that hurtful to finances and you enjoy the social aspect .
Phil is exactly what his nick name states , a poker brat . in every sense , he wil wind you up , chew you up , spit you out and take a million off you all at once , his poker is at the highest level , and while he isnt my favourite , he is still the king for me .
Tony G the australian is my favourite character and player .

I cant keep a straight face either but im one of those people where you cant tell if im lying , my mates refuse to play for more than 10 GBP per game with me anymore , I do lose , but i get under their skin and for me thats the key .
Thanks for your luck wishes on the poker section , Im co-Community leader , Zander made two people community leaders , but thats still just as good for me.

Hey Mark, Iam new to the BR, but really enjoyed your piece on The Brat. I really dont like Phil's antic's at the table. But by all account's i've read other player's say away from the table he's agreat guy. But the blow up at the 2008 World Series was WAYYYY over the line even for Phil. That being said i do believe that he is the best tourny player at the present. But i do not think he is the King of poker, i believe that distinction should go to the top Cash game player. I realize we may never know who won the most cash game money each year, but i truly believe the guy that play's his own money every time he sit's down at a table and win's the most real cash not tourny cash shhould be crowned the King of poker for that year. Firstly Fred the leading money winner is actually Jamie Gold ( surprising I know ) , Phil Is way over the top at the table , maybe thats all in the make up of Helmuth the Poker player , Helmuth the man is somewhat different , hes a family guy who loves being at home with the kids .
Phils outbursts come mainly due to the fact that people show him less respect than he would like , he believes as a record bracelet winner that people should lay hands down , but they wanna beat the champ Phil Helmuth , and make a name for themselves , and it gets under his skin , especially devilfish .
I like helmuth but my personal favourite is phil laak , but if you ask me who the king of poker is for real it still has to be texas dolly , he won the WSOP's when it was 12 - 18 million dollar jackpots , there are too many great poker players to definitivly say who is the best , its so tough . I mean Barry Greenstein , Todd Brunson , Gus Hansen and a few others are waiting in the wings .

I agree Mark, it is very hard to say who's truly the Best. And yes Dolly is probably the true standing King currently. I guess right now i like Daniel Negranue (misspelled i know) and Chris Ferguson, I just like their gameplay and their approach and style of play. They are the ones that I try 2 draw different little things from in my game. I play alot both online and at the tables and find that i have 2 be very careful about switching from 1 to the other. Thanks for the welcome 2 BR, I think I am going 2 really enjoy it. After 2 major back surgerys in the last 13 months and 1 major neck surgery 3 months ago ive had ALOT of down time 2 play online and make 2 the tables on a regular basis.

Yes Daniel Negraneau ( correct way for you ) And Jesus are very under rated players , Negraneau impresses me with his ability to read peoples hands , in fact hes better at it than Phil Helmuth , while Chris Ferguson gives nothing away , he must be like reading a block of Ice . I watch poker very regular and I play regular too , I guess my style is a bit of everybodys incorporated together because playing cash games against my friends , they cant handle me , I mix my play up all the time and they always make the comment that they can never tell what my game is ( a good thing as i always take their money ) .
This sitew has more football and Formula 1 articles etc ..... its surprising that there isnt a huge following of Poker on this site , ill try my best to keep the articles flowing , WPT , EPT and other poker should be in play soon so ill have them to write about .
Sorry to hear about your neck and back , I hope all goes well , and which online Poker site do you use ? I use Paddypowerpoker .

Hey Mark, thanks 4 the responce. Well it may take a little time for poker players 2 find us but when they do the word should spread pretty fast i would think. I will do my part my givin a shout out 2 other players while im playing and tell them 2 check us out. I play on 4 different sites...Cash... on Carbon Poker and Doyles room, and for fun with still a chance to win entries to cash tournys at Pure Play and Absolute Poker. I really like Carbon and Pureplay, I like these smaller less well known sites better than the mega sites . I also play in a weekly cash home game, sometimes if we have enough we play tourny format or if there is 8 or less we just play a straight cash buy-in game....Ill sure do what i can 2 get the word out.....Later and have good sat. nite.....Being im a SOONER FAN I guess u know what ill be doin 2nite....BOOMER>>>>SOONER...LOL
