WWE Shawn Michaels Summerslam Disaster 2008:: 8/17/08
The Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer lived up to its name. From a match were The Game took on one of the largest men in the world, to two bizarre lovers taking the gold in a winner-takes-all match, to a self-made millionaire getting "Punk'd", and a Deadman returning to punish, Summerslam truly proved to be the Biggest Blockbuster of the Summer. And that's saying something, compared to the Beijing Olympics, not to mention Batman: The Dark Night grossing more than $420,000,000.
But before any match took place, an incredibly emotional, not to mention infuriating event occurred.
"The Referee has declared HBK unable to continue, therefore, the winner is Y2J, Chris Jericho!...." These were the words Lillian Garcia announced to the crowd at the Great American Bash back in July. After months of fighting, not to mention a devastating eye injury, The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho were set to go again at the Great American Bash. After severely damaging Michaels eye, that was all Jericho focused on at the Bash. More blood poured out of Michaels eye than water at Niagara Falls. Two weeks before Summerslam, Michaels addressed millions of Monday Night Raw fans. He said that he would have an exam on his eye the Friday before Summerslam. If the doctors told him he could return at some point, he said he would. Yet if the docs said there was further injury to his eye, he would have to walk away. And at Summerslam, he did just that. Occupanied to the ring by his wife Rebecca, The Heartbreak Kid, The Showstopper, Mr. Wrestlemania, announced he would have to retire. After a career spanning more than two decades, after numerous and legendary incidents such as the Madison Square Garden Curtain Call, The Montreal Screwjob and most recently, ending the career of the legendary Ric Flair, it was all over. But then, who but Chris Jericho came out an spoiled HBK's moment. Jericho demanded Michaels admit that the real reason he was retiring was because Jericho had damaged his eye. Michaels replied: "Ok Chris. I'll go home, sit my wife down with my kids, and tell them that the reason he can't go to work anymore is because of the actions of a worthless, disgusting, low life. I want you Chris to go home and sit your wife down, sit your kids down, and tell them that Daddy will never be Shawn Michaels." Y2J swung, and connected. But he didn't hit HBK. Instead, he drilled HBK's wife, Rebbeca. Jericho ran from the ring as referees and paramedics help Mrs. HBK. Michaels stared at Jericho, as Jericho nervously hurried away. Mrs. Michaels had a noticably cut and fat lip, and stood in the ring receiving a hug from Shawn who kept saying "I'm sorry" over and over again. She was then escorted from the ring.
The feud between Michaels and Jericho started way back in march, when Jericho became the guest referee in a match a WWE Backlash between Michaels and 'The Animal' Batista. Michaels, during the match, faked an injury, then attacked Batista to win. Jericho then went on for months calling Shawn a 'lying, cheating piece of crap.' He turned on the crowd for siding with Michaels despite Jericho claiming that Michaels was a liar, and that Jericho was telling the truth. This lead to 3 fights between the two. One devastating night on RAW changed everything. Jericho, the host of his own talk show segment called the Highlight Reel, had HBK as the guest. He then tricked Shawn, attacked him, and then threw him, head first, into the plasma t.v. on the set. This damaged his eye. Jericho did further damage to it over the months, which led to their match at the Great American Bash, and the eventually The Heartbreak Kids retirement.
This is far from over. The look on Michaels face after Jericho struck Michaels' wife told us that. Jericho is currently in the hunt for C.M. Punks World Heavyweight Championship. Jericho, along with Kane, Batista, C.M. Punk, John 'Bradshaw' Layfield (JBL) and John Cena are apart of a championship scramble at WWE Unforgiven. Yet the championship, let alone competing with 4 of the biggest superstars in the WWE today, should be the LAST thing on Chris "You Don't Deserve to Call Me Y2J" Jericho's mind.
