Amazing, humorous, and consistent. That describes the wonderful fair-weatheredness that seems to WOOSH in and out of the city of Chicago on a daily basis.
Whether it's the Chicago Cubs and their on-again, off-again bandwagoneers, or the Bears and Bulls fans who decide that they hate the team when they lose only to cheer again when they win...
It's feast or famine for Wind City sports franchises.
There's no in-between. There's no love for a team when they're down. The only reason fans pack Wrigley Field during a crummy season is because it's the world's largest gay bar.
(See Lou Piniella's dismay when he was told his white shoes were out of style after Labor Day.)
And then there's Chicago sports radio. Some is good; most is not. The local flavor is generally one of bitterness and complaint—but occasionally a true "fan" will manage to get on the air.
Of course, he'll only get to air his opinion for a mere moment before getting the hook—because he isn't as angry and ornery as the rest of the city.
Don't get me wrong—there are good fans too. This group, surprisingly, includes mostly White Sox and Blackhawks supporters.
They generally seem to be a heady mix of knowledgeable and open-minded—with a dash of rationality sprinkled in for good measure.
Crazy, I know .
I've met my fair share of Chi-town fans, and from what I can tell this is the only city in the country where people can manage to complain about both the failures of future draft picks and their quarterback's facial hair (or "neck beard," as they would have it).
But hey, who the hell am I?
That's just like, my opinion, man.
