Currently in Formula 1, there is a lot of talk about the points system and whether it is adequate or if it should be changed.

The points system may not seem that important to some, but it can have a big impact on the tactics drivers and teams use in races, depending on the reward available to them.

So what should an ideal points system be able to provide?

·        Reward for race winners

·        Motivation to overtake in the final third of a race and for front runners to keep pushing for the race win

·        Opportunities for points for midfield and back-of-the-grid teams

·        A system that can keep the championship close

·        A system where the best performing driver can win the title

·        The system has to be easy for fans to understand

It’s never going to be possible for a points system to provide all of those wishes, but I think the current system could be easily improved to incorporate more of what the F1 points system needs to achieve.

The current points system is 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Current standings with this system

Lewis Hamilton - 62 points

Kimi Raikkonen - 57 points

Felipe Massa - 54 points

Robert Kubica - 49 points

Ferrari - 111 points

McLaren - 100 points

BMW Sauber - 90 points

  1. Your 25 and so on system would make this just a NASCAR that turns right as well as left. It would be too ridiculous, and frankly, I see no need to change it, just give two points for pole and one for fastest lap. jod done and sorted. no need for a radical.

Good article though and very well researched, just shows why a lot of people are big fans of yours mate.

  2. wonderfully researched article

  3. Woah Dan, that was a long un ! ... Great article though, it shows the effort that you put into your work that helps you get results ... 5 and a vote from me !

  4. interesting stuff.. i reckon the points system does definately need to change... i mentioned it in the F1RT round 1.
I think that teams furthur down the grid need to be rewarded more... yet also i think the winner needs a bigger points haul. catch 22.
as for your proposed system... i'm gonna be honest here mate... i don't like it. i think that history and records needs to be kept... and having 157 points with seven rounds left is too much in my opinion... people need to stuggle and strive to break records, not rely on rule changes.

i liked that one though... 5* and my pick

  5. I agree with Michael with the NASCAR analogy. I still haven't figured out how all those (supposedly) whiskey tango fans can figure out that system. I like it the way it is now. I agree, maybe there should be points added for fastest lap and pole. Not sure what the values should be, but it would be a good idea. With this system, Kimi would have gotten a bit of reward for Canada even though he was taken out in the pits.

    1. Thanks.

  6. Some good idea's but points down to 15th is too easy. Many formula 1 drivers have come and gone without ever scoring a point and it's an honour to do so.

  7. i agree with the issues highlighted, but i too, dont think that your points system would be a viable proposal, but i do agree with the fact that they need to change. i also agree with the more likley idea, of 12 points for a win. its slightly more than it is currently, and would be a good yard stick to measure if they need to change it even higher or not.
who knows? could make the ends of the races more interesting if someone is on the 2nd weekend for the engine.

  8. I think that fewer points are more valuable. However, I do agree that a change needs to be instituted in some manner or another. I think that a point should be given for maybe a fastest pit stop, a fastest lap, etc.

    What's your take on this?

  9. I don't agree with the idea of points for fastest laps, I don't think it would work in F1.

I think what you would find happening is a load of midfield drivers coming in for soft tyres at the end of the race and going for 1 lap runs to get a faster lap time than the guys out front. In my view this would look pretty silly.

points for qualifying? well maybe thats a possibility, getting pole position is a good acheivement but in my view I think F1 should just concentrate on getting the right points system in the race rather than offering bonus points.

  10. McLaren bitched and moaned to get the points system we have, they felt it was the only hope of beating Michael. Now they want a point system that favors hamilton, I know give points for the guys with the biggest mouth, nobody would catch him then
