With speculation rife in the past few days that Wayne Rooney is refusing to sign a new contract with United and his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson has broken down. As a Manchester United fan, I have already been thinking about all of the possible solutions should Rooney leave at the end of the season and have come up with a few names who could fill Rooney's boots.
The Mexican Michael Owen?
In recent times, United has not been drawn into spending big as the last big money signing was Dimitar Berbatov ,and it is only now that Ferguson is reaping the benefits. Should Hernandez have a good first season then it is very likely that Sir Alex will refuse to spend big money and trust in Hernandez along with Berbatov, Michael Owen and Federico Macheda.
A Hero's Return?
Remember this man? He didn't have the best career with United, but he was loved by all the fans especially because he scored a brace at Anfield against the old enemy. With Forlan at United, it was a case of timing why he didn't do so well. He had to compete with Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who at the time was on fire for United and always played up top on his own. There was one season where Van Nistelrooy was injured for the start of it and Diego Forlan just couldn't stop scoring. However it was not meant to be as Forlan left for sunny Spain.
Fast forward to 2010 and Diego Forlan is now regarded as one of the finest strikers in world football, having won the golden boot award in La Liga for two different clubs and also picking up the best player award at the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Given his current age, Forlan would be seen as a stop gap while the younger strikers such as Welbeck and Macheda are ready to step up. However just imagine how deadly a partnership of Forlan and Berbatov could be for a year or two.
Maradona's favourite son
Here is a man who seems destined for the top. Awesome ability, hails from a fantastic footballing nation in Argentina and he is also the son-in-law of one of the all time greats in Diego Maradona. Sergio Aguero was seen as the man to fill Fernando Torres' boots when he left for Liverpool, and he hasn't done a bad job at it. However he wants the same things that Torres wanted, and he doesn't think that Atletico Madrid can offer him these things. He seems likely to leave soon and should Rooney leave then Manchester United would seem like a viable destination for him.
It will give Aguero the platform needed to showcase his talents on one of the best teams in the world, not to mention one of the best leagues in the world. He will also be able to showcase his talents in the best club competition in the world, the Champions League.
Germany's New Golden Boy
England fans will remember him for scoring two goals in three minutes, which broke all of their hearts. However Thomas Mueller should be remembered by Man United fans as the golden boot winner at the World Cup, and that is all they need to remember. He would seem like a striker that Fergie would buy. Despite a good World Cup he is still a rookie and somebody that Fergie can make great like he has done most recently with Rooney and Ronaldo.
However it will be difficult for United to tempt him to leave his homeland and Bayern Munich.
Now there would be some United fans who may not want somebody who has been seen as a flop at Real Madrid to come to Manchester to replace their hero. Well I got news for you. Buying a Real Madrid flop is not a bad thing. Just ask Inter and Spurs with Sneijder and Van Der Vaart.
What people are forgetting is that Benzema is only 22 years of age, and it has taken Rooney to the age of 24 to really show his potential. It was also a similar age with Ronaldo so in that aspect Benzema still has time on his side. I believe that the problem with Benzema at Real Madrid is that he is not the main star and the focal point for them. At Lyon he was their shining light and he scored bags of goals for them in the league and also in the Champions League.
Should Benzema come to United then he will most certainly be loved more than he is at Madrid, and Fergie is the right manager to bring the best out of Benzema.
What a stir this will cause hey?
Surely not? Liverpool's own golden boy leaving in the same year that Manchester United lose their darling?
This is a move that can certainly happen and is very likely. Fergie was always a fan of Torres at Atletico Madrid, but for one reason or another he never went for him and I'm sure he regreted it as Torres set Anfield alight. In addition to this he has been giving one of the best defenders in Nemanja Vidic a torrid time almost every single game he plays against him.
With Liverpool in Turmoil this season, should they not qualify for even the Europa League, you cannot imagine Fernando Torres staying there for another season. He left Atletico Madrid because he wanted Champions League football and he wanted to challenge for trophies.
Should Rooney leave then he will be given that platform to do so at United. However this move would probably be one of the most controversial moves in Premier League history. There was almost an uproar when Gerrard almost left to go Chelsea. Just imagine what it would be like should Fernando Torres become one of Ferguson's red army.
This move can happen but only if Liverpool has another poor season and Wayne Rooney leaves United.
Or he could just sign a new contract
At the end of the day Rooney could just end up signing a new contract thus putting an end to all the talk of a replacement for him. But should he leave then there are quite a few options available for United to look into.
