Decision to phone-a-friend draws ire of competition
Usain Bolt, the 100m world record holder and Olympic champion, already under scrutiny for his premature celebration during the 100m final, is drawing the folded arms and disapproving headshakes of many in the track & field community for his decision to phone-a-friend on his way to winning the 200 meter final in world record time.
"It all happened so fast," said bronze medalist Walter Dix. "I was behind him on the straightaway, and all the sudden I hear, 'Marvin? Marvin, are you there?' I look up and there's Usain talking on his cell phone."
Replays seemed to indicate Bolt mouthing the words, "Should I win? Should I win?" before crossing the finish line triumphantly, four body-lengths in front of the field.
The Jamaican superstar ducked reporters after the race, instead choosing to celebrate by running around the track with his country's flag draped around his neck.
"Egregious," said silver medalist Shawn Crawford. "Simply egregious."
No word on whether the IOC plans to investigate.
