Great Britain Steal the Olympic Show Again on Tuesday

Andrew McNairAug 19, 2008

So it's 13. No, 14. No, 15. No, no, no, it's 16 gold medals for Team Great Britain!

I was wondering what it was going to be like after the medal rush last night and what the rest of the Olympics would have in store, but I needn't have bothered. Today's four gold medals have cemented the team their third spot in the medal table for a while to come and equaled Britain's best days of these Olympics.

Paul Goodison just had to avoid finishing last in the final laser race and the 30-year-old did just that to take Britain's 13th gold of the competition.

It was then back to the Velodrome for more track cycling. Victoria Pembleton won the women's sprint race to secure the 14th gold for team GB.

Chris Hoy had already won two gold medals at this Olympics and was challenged by young teammate Jason Kenny in the final of the men's sprint. The veteran Scot was too strong for Kenny and snatched his third gold.

This marks another significant achievement for a British athlete as Hoy becomes the first Brit to win three golds at an Olympics since 1908.

These were already Britain's best Olympics in decades but they're fast becoming the best ever for a jubilant Team GB. It's far and beyond anything I was expecting, and I can't wait for London 2012!

The British audience then moved onto the bird's nest as track and field took centre stage. Christine Ohuruogu was up in the women's 400m final and she didn't disappoint us. Gold No. 16!

I must admit I was emotionally moved by the anthem blasting out around the Olympic Stadium and it was a proud moment for me. It was much like watching Dame Kelly Holmes four years earlier.

There is something special about track and field. These events make the Olympics for me, and it was essential that we got a gold to cap off these fantastic Games.

I'm truly glad we're in Beijing now!

Jermaine Mason rounded out the day with a surprise silver in the high jump.

I do love surprises. And, as you all know by now, I love Team Great Britain.
