Robinho or Andrei Arshavin to Chelsea?

...Aug 18, 2008

Chelsea have been actively searching to land Real Madrid's Robinho. Although they remain steadfast and adamant that he is going nowhere, Robinho himself has expressed his wishes to be allowed to leave (to join Chelsea).

However, it's clear Real Madrid are making us sweat over Robinho and I just hope we don't succumb to their demands. We all know the price increases ten-fold when Chelsea come calling, but recently we've shown a little more sternness in not caving in and paying whatever the "selling" club wants.

Chelsea have to decide quickly if we are playing a game of poker with Real which will finally end in a winning hand and with us capturing Robinho, or if Real really will not agree to sell him to us. It seems at the moment that Real Madrid will hold out and keep Robinho for at least another year...

With that in mind, if we can't get Robinho then, in my opinion, Arshavin would be a good second choice. He has bags of skill, an eye for the goal, and is a natural footballer who can play left, right, or behind the main striker. Not as tricky as Robinho, but a good second choice.

Can't see us going for Quaresma as LFS didn't fancy him for Portugal and played Simao in front of him every time. Interestingly, Chelsea have shown interest in Simao but he has a 40 million euro buy out clause at Benfica, which makes Arshavin, at 19 million, a good value.

Maybe Scolari doesn't rate Arshavin as highly as he does Robinho, but for a long time, a few of us have been trumpeting the qualities of Arshavin. And you'd have to fancy our chances if it came to a straight fight between us and Tottenham for his services.

That said, you'd have to feel that either SWP or Malouda would make way.

As for Kaka, the reported £70 million is not just a lot of dosh, it's an obscene amount for one player who—heaven forbid—could suffer an horrendous injury. Then everything would go up in smoke.

Chelsea have to think seriously about becoming less dependent on Roman's wealth and answering critics in the best way possible so that we can be self-sufficient. Shelling out that amount for a player—however good he is—goes against the club's objectives.

Either way, the search for a quality winger goes on.....
