Derek Stepan has definitely earned a spot in the lineup. The 20-year-old center scored a hat trick in his very first NHL game, becoming the first New York Ranger and the fourth player in NHL history to do so.
The young center had a few more opportunities, including an empty net, to score one more to break the record for most goals by a player in his first NHL game, but he finished the contest with three.
Who would have thought?: A Ranger fan disappointed that a rookie didn't score four in his first NHL game.
Stepan is a breath of fresh air for the New York Rangers. In just one game, he has proven his worth. Stepan's performance just shows how bright the future can be for the New York Rangers if their prospects continue to develop properly.
Just look at the box score. Stepan scored three goals, Brandon Dubinsky scored two goals, Daniel Girardi had two assists, Mark Staal had an assist, Antem Anisimov had an assist, Ryan Callahan had an assist, and Henrik Lundqvist had a solid performance in net.
All of these players are homegrown. Glen Sather and the New York Rangers must be doing something right.
