WWE SummerSlam Results: Undertaker Returns, All World Champions Retain
The Undertaker returned to the ring in a fiery manner and all World Champions retained their belts at SummerSlam Sunday night from the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN.
In the main event, the Undertaker defeated long-time rival Edge in a Hell in a Cell Match that saw Edge sent through the ring, while HHH, CM Punk and Mark Henry all defended their respective World titles with mixed results. For all of the results and details from one of WWE's Big Four PPVs, keep reading this special Ropes, Ring and Cage report!
>Undertaker defeated Edge in a Hell in a Cell match: This wasn't a bloody HIAC match, but more hard-hitting and brutal as both guys used the cage and the various weapons (stairs, chairs, ladders) to their advantage. Notable spots were a running/jumping spear by Edge that ripped open one of the Cell's panels. Edge tried the Old School rope walk, but Taker crotched him and then chokeslammed him through two tables. End came when Taker hit Edge with a tv camera, then a concerto and a tombstone for the pin.
Post-match, Taker came back to the ring and set up two ladders. He then chokeslammed Edge from halfway up the ladders through the ring. A minute later, giant flames started shooting out of the hole meaning that Edge was 'sent straight to hell.' This wasn't the best HIAC match I've ever seen and Ross didn't sound that enthused at the finish.
>World Champion CM Punk defeated JBL: What? A clean win for Punk? Punk won clean with the Go To Sleep...scary moment when the two bumped heads and JBL acted like he had lost feeling in his arm while Punk was bleeding from the back of the head. Definitely wasn't a planned part, but hopefully all is well. I'm still shocked Punk went over clean...maybe now he'll be treated as a real champion.
>WWE Champion HHH defeated Great Khali: The build of whether HHH could hit the Pedigree on Khali worked. End came when HHH escaped a head vice attempt, ducked a Khali charge and followed with the kick/Pedigree finish. Hopefully, this will be the last time we see these two go at it.
>Batista defeated John Cena: Wow...surprising end. End came when Cena came off the top with a dropkick attempt that Batista turned into a power bomb. Cena kicked out and Batista finished him with the Batista Bomb for the pin.
>MVP defeated Jeff Hardy: Interesting end that played off of the great Shelton Benjamin/Hardy match from last Friday's Smackdown. Benjamin came out and Hardy jumped off with a plancha on Benjamin instead of a swanton to finish MVP. Hardy went up again to hit the swanton, missed and MVP hit the Drive-By kick to get the pin. I see a three-way for the US title coming up at September's PPV, can you?
>Santino Marellia/Beth Phoenix defeated Kofi Kingston/Mickie James to become the I-C Champion and Women's Champion: Yeah, that sounds clean. Phoenix got the win for her team with the double chicken wing into front slam with the pin after James had laid out Santino with a ddt. Glad to see that the Intercontinental belt is still being treated as a Russo-style joke prop.
>Shawn Michaels 'retired' as he came out with wife Rebecca, talking about how this was his choice and that he was listening to his family and friends. Chris Jericho came out and wanted Michaels to admit that it was he who really retired him. Michaels did, but said that Jericho would have to admit that he could never be Shawn Michaels. Jericho attempted to sucker-punch HBK, but Michaels ducked and Jericho punched Rebecca instead. This angle is FAR from over.
>Matt Hardy defeated ECW Champion Mark Henry by dq: If there's any indication of why the WWE should just end the ECW brand, it was this 33-second debacle. What a joke. Hardy hit the Twist of Fate and Atlas pulled out the ref during the count for a dq. Atlas and Henry were double-teaming Hardy which prompted Jeff hardy to come out to make the save. 33 seconds? Really?
