New York Rangers Season Preview

Bad:
The Rangers were on the penalty kill for 17 more times than they were on the power play. Also, no team allowed more shorthanded goals than the New York Rangers. In the 2008-2009 season, the Rangers were great when playing after regulation. It wasn’t the same this season. In fact, had the Rangers won at least two more games when games went past regulation, we wouldn’t have seen the run of the Flyers. The Rangers were also terrible at scoring first. They only scored first 33 times. Also, no team had fewer points when trailing after two periods than the New York Rangers.

Good:
The New York Rangers did have decent special teams last year. They were in the top half in their power play and they were in the top ten in the penalty kill. Also, only four teams had better records in three goal margins than the New York Rangers.

Best Free Agent Lost:
Losing Olli Jokinen and Jamie Lundmark could be devastating for a shaky offense.

Best Free Agent Signed:
The Rangers will be relying heavily on Alexander Frolov to score some goals this year.

Where I see the Rangers this year:
I see the Rangers firing their coach and having a worse offense this year. This team didn’t click at all last year and who’s to say that they’ll click this year. If they do want to make the playoffs, then they will have to do better at not allowing teams to get shorthanded goals and they will have to play better in overtime. They will also have to score first in more of their games this year.
