Other than losing to the Flyers 9 out of their 11 times that they met each other I can’t think of anything bad to say about Detroit from last year.
No team gave up fewer third period goals than New Jersey, New Jersey were on the power plays for more times than they were on the penalty kill, New Jersey were near the top when it came to winning when scoring first, New Jersey excelled in scoring first, and no team had a better record when leading after two periods than New Jersey’s 33-1-1. With these said, could you imagine if New Jersey took these things into this year and into the playoffs?
Free Agents Lost:
The Devils lost two great free agents. Paul Martin was a great puck mover and now he’s with Pittsburgh. Rob Niedermayer’s veteran leadership will also be missed.
Free Agents Signed:
I know he’s been resigned but to sign Ilya Kovalchuck to an 11 year deal worth only $100 million is a win in my books considering that the NBA star players are getting signing their players to six year contracts worth over a hundred million dollars.
Where New Jersey should be this year:
If New Jersey can win some games against the Flyers and bring their success at all of the other areas in their numbers, look for Jersey to make the finals.
