Miami Dolphins: Special Teams Coach John Bonamego Fired

Jason ClaryCorrespondent IOctober 5, 2010

Just hours after the Miami Dolphins lost to the New England Patriots in an embarrassing fashion, special teams coach John Bonamego was fired.

This move could have been seen from miles away, after the Dolphins have underperformed all season on special teams.

Tony Sparano stresses discipline on every side of the ball, and it is extremely frustrating for a detailed and precise coach like him to see a group perform so poorly.

Last night, the Patriots blocked a punt, a kick, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. These three occurrences catalyzed the Pats to take away any momentum and home-field advantage that the Dolphins had.

Miami will have two weeks to correct their mistakes, as they will have a bye-week in Week Five.

Darren Rizzi is expected to replace Bonamego. Rizzi was a head coach at Rhode Island and an assistant coach at Northeastern University.

The Dolphins have had a punt blocked in two consecutive games, which is not a recipe for success in the NFL.

Miami will play at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers after their bye week. They also play Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore in the following weeks.
