The Miami Dolphins fired special teams coach John Bonamego today after last night’s disaster.

Assistant special teams coach Darren Rizzi will replace him, according to head coach Tony Sparano.

The Dolphins' special teams have been horrendous the last two weeks, and were especially bad last night against New England. Against the Jets last Sunday night, they gave up a blocked punt.

Last night, the unit’s play was abysmal, yielding a blocked punt, a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown, and a kickoff that was returned for a touchdown.

All coming in the second half.

It was one of the main reasons why Miami took a 41-14 beating. The loss sets them back with a 2-2 record, good for third place in the ultra-competitive AFC East.

“I want my core players to play better on special teams right now,” Sparano said. “To be honest, if we need to put more starters in there, we’ll look at that.”
