Bad from last year:
Carolina was in the bottom half in terms of power plays last year. They scored on 16.1% of their power plays and they allowed 8 shorthanded goals. The winning percentage for the Hurricanes when scoring first was in the bottom quarter of the league. After starting at 2-2-0 last year the Hurricanes went on a 14 game losing streak. 10 of those games came within regulation. Another thing for Carolina was that they were on the short end of things for the most times in the Eastern Conference on the road.
Good from last year:
The Hurricanes were able to score first in 41 of their games last year. Getting wins for points was just a struggle for Carolina last year. The other good thing was the fact that they went 25-14-3 after January 1. Their start just killed them last year.
Best Free Agent Lost:
Losing Ray Whitney will hurt them on the offensive end. He is a good passer and an accurate shooter.
Best Free Agent Signed:
Patrick O’Sullivan will be a good addition considering that they did lose Ray Whitney. Patrick will win you face-offs and he will create goals.
Where they should be this year:
If Carolina can win while scoring first and not kill themselves in terms of penalties then they should fair pretty good. But, their schedule has them on the road for the first 7 games. That’s a lot of road games to start a season. Plus, their first two games are overseas. I’m not expecting this team to be a playoff team this year.
