Who could have thought it? One of the three favourites to win the 100m is out. Tyson Gay could only achieve fifth place in the semis and will be watching the battle between Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell from the sidelines.

Gay's preparation for the Games has been marred by injury. His disappointment, nevertheless, was writ large on his face in his interview with the BBC.

Asked "where do you go from here?", he could only respond: "I don't know."

Meanwhile, Bolt and Powell qualified with ease, each looking so comfortable to win their respective semis.

American hopes now rest on the shoulders of Walter Dix and Darvis Patton.
