FINAL SCORE: Redskins 17, Eagles 12
Today marks Donovan McNabb's return to Philly, as the Washington Redskins travel to battle the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4's most talked-about game.
Good afternoon everybody! B/R NFC Team Leader & Philadelphia Eagles Featured Columnist Lou DiPietro here, and I'll be live blogging you through No. 5's return to the city he called home for 11 seasons.
McNabb is on the other side of Lincoln Financial Field for the first time today, and while the Eagles defense has looked awesome at times and unfocused at others, Sean McDermott's group will likely be very "up" to face their former teammate.
Post game wrap-up:
The Eagles almost stole one, but one quick look at the stat sheet shows they didn't deserve to.
On defense, the Birds allowed 169 yards rushing, which is a disappointing two-game total for them; they held McNabb to that lowly stat line, but couldn't do it the other way.
The offense, meanwhile, was less than dynamic with Kolb in there. He had good numbers (22/35, 201 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), but he was way too conservative.
Eagles QBs completed 27 passes for 250 yards, but LeSean McCoy had 12 catches for 110 yards. When your starting RB has half of your air output, either you're playing a 13-man defense or your offense is way too conservative.
Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson had 4 catches for 34 yards combined, and two of Brent Celek's three grabs came in the final 5 minutes. Three big offensive weapons all but neutralized.
Thankfully for the Birds, I think the NFC East is equally weak across the board this year. The Redskins still can't score, Dallas has offensive line issues, and the Giants can't play defense.
As of now, they're in a virtual tie for first with a Sunday nighter at San Francisco on tap next week.
Until then, good night everybody!
McNabb and Andy Reid embrace at midfield, and Washington escapes with a win. The Skins and Eagles are now virtually tied atop the NFC East at 2-2, with the 1-2 Cowboys idle and the 1-2 Giants hosting Chicago in about an hour.
So that's it, Philly almost pulls it out but Washington wins 17-12.
Donovan McNabb's final line: 8/19 for 125 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT (QB rating of 60.2 says FOX), 39 yards on five rushes, and one big victory.
Gonna collect my thoughts and we'll wrap it up.
Kolb loads up and throws...and it's caught by DeAngelo Hall! Too bad Hall is a Redskin. The ball hit Jason Avant in the hands but he couldn't hang on to it; Hall picks it, and it's a 17-12 Skins victory.
Crazy hook and lateral play actually works, as the Eagles get 18. D-Jax is hurt though. Four seconds left, so it's one last shot at the end zone.
Throw into triple coverage for D-Jax is incomplete, and it's 4th and 10 at midfield. One last shot with :13 to go.
Rocky McIntosh bats down a pass intended for Celek, and it's getting grim.
Yikes. Kolb overthrows McCoy, but D-Jax was WIDE open downfield. Of course, Kolb missed him and went for the 3 yard checkdown.
Celek cant make the catch over the middle, but Washington is called for defensive holding. That's 5 and an automatic first, so it's midfield with 25 seconds to go.
Celek gets a first, Eagles spike. 55 yards to go, 30 seconds on the clock. Gonna make it interesting, and I think you have to take a shot downfield here.
Kolb to Jackson for 9, and here's the hurryup.
And it was nearly over in 5 seconds, as Carlos Rogers broke off the route and dropped what would've been a game ending pick.
Another sloppy punt, and the Eagles have the ball at their own 26 with 1:07 to go and no timeouts left. Time for Kolb to get un-conservative.
Torain gets three, and it's 4th down. Skins will punt, but run the clock down and take a time out.
False start perhaps saves the Birds a bit, as it stops the clock and makes the down 2nd and 8. Torain runs for 2 and we're down to the 2 minute warning with a huge 3rd and 6.
Torain rumbles for a first down, and that's going to be just about the end. The Eagles wont get the ball back until there are 90 seconds left at best.
The Birds have given up 165 yards rushing today...that won't win you many games.
Kind of dumb to run out of bounds there, although the Birds did have to call their last time out on the next play.
McNabb gets a HUGE first down, scrambling for 18 on 3rd down. No contain at all there, and once he outran Bradley, it was academic.
Josh Scobee just his a 59-yarder at the gun, and the Jags beat the Colts 31-28.
1/4 of the way through the season and Houston leads the AFC South with all three other teams one game behind. Unreal.
My buddy in Cali just texted me about the game, in the process informing me that the Eagles/Skins game is on in SD because the Chargers are blacked out. That's hilarious.
Bryant Westbrook bobbles the kickoff and the Skins start inside the 20. Gain of 3 on first down and Philly spends its first Time Out.
Lorenzo Alexander, who started at ROLB because he could better shadow Vick, is the one who broke up that 2-pointer. That's called contributing when given the chance, folks.
First 2 point try of the year, and Kolb is in the gun. Pass is tipped incomplete, and it's 17-12 with 4:10 to go.
Touchdown to Celek, and the short pass bonanza finally pays off! Time to go for 2 here, and if they get it, we've got a ballgame.
Make that 28, with 12 catches.
