The Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers have officially agreed to a trade that will send veteran defense man Bryan McCabe and an un-named player to the Florida Panthers for D-man Mike Van Ryn, but the deal will not go through until September 1st when Bryan McCabe collects his pay, says Rogers Sportsnet.
There is also said to be another player coming to Toronto with Mike Van Ryn. Last season in 54 games McCabe had 5 goals and 18 assists for a total of 23 points. Van Ryn had just two assists in 22 games in an injury plagued season with the Panthers.
It is also been confirmed that Jay Bouwmeester is not part of the deal. So with that being said, is this a good deal for the Maple Leafs?
Well, it depends on who that un-named soon to be Panthers player is. If its someone like Ian White, than yes. If its Alex Steen than no. However it is highly un-likely that someone with the caliber of Alexander Steen is going to leave the Maple Leafs. Especially if they are going to need two more leaders (a captain and one assistant captain), as it is most likely that no matter what Sundin's decision is they will have a new captain because he may not make a decision before training camp.
Personally I think that Mike Van Ryn will fair a lot better in Toronto than he did in Florida. The same can be said for Bryan McCabe going to Florida because maybe all he needed was to go to a different team. Because if he thought that going to a different team wouldn't help, than he probably would not have waived his no-movement clause.
Maybe the Maple Leafs season depends on this trade...
