Hollis “The Tank” Thomas Out for Two Months, All Eyes Move to Sedrick Ellis
With Thomas out for at least two months, the Saints will be looking to their 2008 first-round pick Sedrick Ellis to have even a bigger impact than what was originally expected.
Thomas was to be used more in run situations, with Ellis coming in on passing downs. Now that Thomas is out, the pressure will be on Ellis to have an impact in both areas and will surely see more playing time.
The loss of Thomas is a big one. Scott Fujita has thrived as the Saints' leading tackler, with help from Thomas. Fujita has had the luxury of roaming free, due in part to the fact that Thomas does a great job of keeping those big offensive tackles and guards off of him.
Now, Ellis will have to earn the veterans' trust and show everyone he is up to the challenge. The defensive line has taken a beating in training camp so far, with Brian Young and Antwan Lake suffering from knee injuries and have been limited in practice. Ellis himself has had some soreness in his right ankle and also has been limited in practice.
If the Saints are to have any chance of improving from last years disappointing season, the defensive line is going to be a key component. Jonathan Vilma, whom the Saints traded for this offseason to help shore up the linebacking corps, will also suffer if the Saints' defensive front cannot protect them.
All eyes will be on the Saints' defense this year, and the focus will be on how well the big guys up front do. Creating pressure will be the key to a successful 2008 season.
