Queiroz has named his first and brand new squad for the friendly against Faroe Islands on the 20th of august next Wednesday. Absent are some very familar names to the Portuguese national team. Such as keeper Ricardo, Petit, and Quaresma. Based on his performance at Euro 2008 Ricardo will need to win his way back into the team. The Real Betis keeper was named to the Portuguese squad although he failed to figure in first team football with Real Betis. Quaresma for all intensive purposes is just getting a rest in favour of some running out some younger players for evaluation, I would suspect he will be called upon for the first qualification game in September. Finally I believe Petit will retire from international football after his move to Cologne in Germany from Benefica in Portugal.
There are few players I'm delighted to see get a call to the senior national team. Manuel Fernandes is one of those players receiving this selection will boost his confidence and help in his development he would be a perfect defensive midfielder for the Portuguese squad. The 2nd player would be Antunes a very promising lb that would improve Portugal's fortunes at the position. Let the Queiroz era begin.
